In a bold move reflecting growing employee unrest, thousands of Google workers have banded together to demand protections against potential layoffs as the tech giant intensifies its investment in artificial intelligence. The petition, signed by over 4,500 individuals, was presented to CEO Sundar Pichai and highlights concerns about job security amid a backdrop of significant workforce reductions across the sector.
A Call for Change
On Thursday, Google employees delivered their petition to the company’s headquarters in Mountain View, California. Parul Koul, a software engineer at Google and president of the Alphabet Workers Union, emphasised the paradox of the company’s soaring success against the backdrop of layoffs. “Make no mistake: this is a company that is enjoying massive, unprecedented success,” Koul stated, referencing Google’s staggering $4 trillion valuation, which has quadrupled in just six years. She pointedly remarked, “These layoffs and cuts are not difficult decisions; they are profit being prioritised over the people who drive this company forward.”
The demands articulated in the petition include guaranteed severance packages, the option for buyouts before any mandatory layoffs across all departments, and the ability to take severance as extended paid leave. Furthermore, union members are advocating for the elimination of performance ratings that they argue prioritise quotas over actual merit.
A Disheartening Response
Upon delivering the petition, employees encountered a largely indifferent reception. Koul noted that they were met with “closed doors and no response for the most part,” although a staff member did agree to pass the petition along to Pichai. Koul described the petition as “the largest piece of employee feedback that Google has received about job security,” underscoring the urgency of the situation.
During a press conference following the petition delivery, workers voiced their frustration over Alphabet’s mass layoffs earlier this year, with chants of “shame” echoing in the air. The discontent is palpable, as many employees feel increasingly vulnerable in an environment where job security is tenuous, particularly as the company pivots towards AI.
The Broader Context of Layoffs in Tech
Google is not alone in its workforce reductions. The tech industry at large is grappling with similar issues. Meta, for instance, has faced allegations of using AI to identify employees for layoffs, with recent lawsuits claiming that workers were targeted for taking leave. Earlier this year, Meta reduced its workforce by approximately 8,000.
Other tech giants have similarly streamlined their operations, with Oracle cutting around 21,000 positions, citing AI integration as a contributing factor. Block, under CEO Jack Dorsey, laid off nearly half of its workforce, while Microsoft announced plans to cut about 4,800 jobs in its Xbox division, primarily driven by AI investments.
Employee Concerns About AI
At the forefront of the petition’s motivations is a pervasive anxiety about the role of AI in job security. Dan Freedman, a Google software engineer involved in AI tool development, expressed his fears regarding the technology’s potential to render his skills obsolete. “After AI was added to my job requirements, I worried whether I was using it sufficiently and if it might replace me,” he said. “I have to wonder if I’m next,” he added, reflecting the sentiment of many employees who feel the looming threat of AI on their roles.
Why it Matters
The push for layoff protections at Google encapsulates a broader trend of employee activism in the tech sector, particularly as companies herald AI as a transformative force while simultaneously reducing their workforce. The growing dissatisfaction among workers signals a critical moment in the relationship between tech employees and their employers. As tech giants continue to prioritise profits over personnel, the demand for job security and fair treatment is likely to intensify, reshaping the dynamics of Silicon Valley and beyond.
