Parul Koul, a software engineer at Google and president of the Alphabet Workers Union, made it clear that the growing financial success of the company—boasting a staggering $4 trillion valuation—was not an excuse for prioritising profits over people. “These layoffs and cuts are not difficult decisions, but simply profit being put over the people that make this company run,” Koul stated passionately.
The petition outlines several key demands including the establishment of a guaranteed severance package, voluntary buyouts prior to mandatory layoffs across all product areas, and the option for employees to take severance as extended paid leave. Additionally, the union has called for a re-evaluation of performance ratings, which they argue have become overly reliant on meeting quotas rather than reflecting true merit.
The Response from Management
Despite the overwhelming support for the petition, Google’s management did not engage directly with the employees who delivered it. Koul reported that upon presenting their demands, workers were met with closed doors and little to no acknowledgment from the company’s leadership.
