Growing Unease in the Tech Sector

Parul Koul, a software engineer at Google and president of the Alphabet Workers Union, articulated the sentiments of the workforce during a press conference held outside the company’s Mountain View headquarters. “This is a company that is enjoying massive, unprecedented success,” she stated, referencing Google’s staggering $4 trillion valuation, which has seen a remarkable increase over the past six years. Koul accused the company of prioritising profits over the welfare of its employees, asserting that “these layoffs and cuts are not difficult decisions.”
The petition champions several key demands, including guaranteed severance packages, the option for buyouts before mandatory layoffs, and the possibility of converting severance into extended paid leave. Furthermore, union members are advocating for an end to performance evaluations that they believe are based on arbitrary quotas rather than actual merit.
The Response from Leadership
Upon delivering the petition, employees encountered a rather dismissive atmosphere. Koul noted that their efforts were met with “closed doors and no response for the most part,” although a staff member did agree to pass the petition along to Pichai. “This petition is the largest piece of employee feedback that Google has received about job security,” Koul emphasised.
The timing of this rally is significant; it follows Alphabet’s own mass layoffs in 2023, which sparked outrage and prompted chants of “Google, Google you can’t hide, we can see your greedy side” from the assembled workers.
The Broader Landscape of Workforce Reductions
Google is not an isolated case. The tech sector as a whole is witnessing a trend of layoffs linked to the increasing adoption of AI technologies. Reports indicate that Google Cloud has recently laid off employees, and last summer saw a reduction of over one-third of its management overseeing small teams. During Alphabet’s latest earnings call, CFO Anat Ashkenazi identified AI as a “key investment area,” signalling ongoing recruitment efforts in that domain while hinting at further workforce adjustments elsewhere.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, recently faced a lawsuit from employees claiming AI tools were used to target them for layoffs following requests for protected leave. This year alone, Meta has reduced its workforce by approximately 8,000. Oracle has also reported layoffs affecting about 21,000 employees, and Block, led by CEO Jack Dorsey, has seen nearly half its workforce, around 4,000 jobs, cut as efficiency gains through AI take precedence.

Koul pointed out that this petition builds upon the Alphabet union’s previous successes, including securing voluntary exit packages for over 70,000 workers. Yet, she lamented that many of their demands remain unaddressed, leading to today’s demonstration. “We’ve organised actions mobilising hundreds of Googlers around the country to raise visibility and attention to these concerns, and despite this, Google management has chosen to ignore us,” she remarked.
