The BC Parks Foundation’s Spark Grants programme is witnessing a surge of interest from community-focused organisations across the province. This increase comes in response to a growing demand for inclusive outdoor activities that cater to underserved populations. The initiative seeks to dismantle both physical and invisible barriers to nature, ensuring that everyone can experience the benefits of the great outdoors.

A Tailored Approach to Community Needs

With typical grants averaging around £10,000, the funding provided can be adjusted based on the specific requirements of each organisation. “It’s not a one-size-fits-all approach. We collaborate with community service organisations to truly understand their needs,” remarked Kate La Souef, the Vice President of Programs at the BC Parks Foundation. This flexibility allows groups to tailor their projects to best serve their communities, fostering a deeper connection between people and nature.

In the past, the foundation has successfully funded 50 organisations, including notable groups such as the Fort Saint John Association for Community Living, Nature Kids BC, and Indigenous Women Outdoors. This year, the foundation expanded its reach by supporting an additional 10 organisations, indicating a growing commitment to inclusivity in outdoor experiences.

Expanding Horizons for Newcomers

Among the newly funded groups this year are the Pacific Immigrant Resources Society, Squamish Newcomers Services, and Kamloops Immigrant Services. These organisations play a crucial role in helping immigrants and newcomers integrate into their communities through outdoor activities, thus enhancing their social connections and overall well-being.

According to the BC Parks Foundation, the Spark Grants programme has supported approximately 33,000 individuals, facilitating over 155,000 hours spent in British Columbia’s parks. To date, more than £600,000 has been granted to communities that face systemic barriers, demonstrating a significant investment in equity and access to the natural environment.

The Broader Impact of Spark Grants

The Spark Grants initiative is more than just financial support; it represents a shift towards a more inclusive understanding of outdoor recreation. By prioritising the needs of various communities, the BC Parks Foundation is not only increasing access to nature but also fostering a sense of belonging and community cohesion. The initiative encourages diverse populations to engage with their environment, enhancing both physical and mental health outcomes.

As we move towards a more inclusive society, initiatives like the Spark Grants programme are essential. They highlight the importance of making nature accessible to all, ensuring that everyone can benefit from the restorative power of the outdoors.

Why it Matters

The Spark Grants programme is a vital step in addressing the barriers that prevent underserved communities from enjoying nature. By fostering inclusivity and facilitating access to outdoor experiences, the BC Parks Foundation is helping to cultivate healthier, more connected communities. This initiative not only benefits individuals but also enriches the fabric of society as a whole, reminding us of the essential role that the environment plays in our collective well-being.
