The federal Green Party has officially announced its leadership race, unveiling two approved candidates vying for the top position. Former Kitchener Centre MP Mike Morrice and Ottawa’s Nira Dookeran will compete for the role, with the winner set to be revealed on 14 November.
Candidates in the Spotlight
Mike Morrice, who previously represented Kitchener Centre for a single term, is eager to reclaim his parliamentary seat in the forthcoming election. He brings experience and a fresh perspective to the leadership race, having served in various capacities within the party.
In contrast, Nira Dookeran boasts a robust history with the Green Party, having dedicated 12 years to organisational roles and candidacies at both the federal and provincial levels. Her extensive background is expected to resonate with party members as they consider their options.
Membership and Fundraising Requirements
To qualify for the final ballot, both candidates must meet specific criteria by 30 September. They are required to enlist at least 200 new party members and raise a minimum of £15,000. Additionally, securing at least 50 young members aged between 12 and 29 is essential, reflecting the party’s commitment to engaging younger constituents.
Voting will take place from 2 to 13 November, utilising a ranked ballot system. Members will have the opportunity to select their preferred candidate or opt for a “none-of-the-above” choice, a feature entrenched in the party’s constitution since 2006.
Leadership Transition
Longstanding leader Elizabeth May announced her intention to step down last August, although she will remain at the helm until a successor is appointed. May first took on the leadership role in 2006, stepping down in November 2019 after the general election. Annamie Paul succeeded her on 3 October 2020 but resigned in September 2021 amid internal party conflict. May resumed leadership on 19 November 2022, with Jonathan Pedneault joining her as co-leader in January 2025, only to resign shortly after the April 28 election due to an unsuccessful bid for a seat.
