In a remarkable response to a devastating Ebola outbreak, health authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have initiated a swift clinical trial aimed at evaluating two potential treatments. With the first patients enrolled just six weeks after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the outbreak a public health emergency on 17 May, researchers are hopeful that these trials could significantly reduce mortality rates from the Bundibugyo strain of the virus.

Innovative Treatments Under Trial
The ambitious Partners treatment trial has commenced with the administration of two drugs: remdesivir, an antiviral developed by Gilead Sciences, and MBP134, a monoclonal antibody created by Mapp Biopharmaceutical. Participants in the trial will receive either of the drugs, a combination of both, or standard supportive care, with the aim of determining their effectiveness against the Bundibugyo strain.
Prof. Laurens Liesenborghs from the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, who is overseeing the trial, stated: “These two drugs have shown great efficacy in animal models. Our objective is to ascertain if they can lower mortality rates in human patients.” Notably, while Bundibugyo typically has a lower death rate than the more notorious Zaire strain, it still claims approximately one in three lives.

The WHO has reported that sufficient supplies of both remdesivir and MBP134 have been secured for 1,200 patients, thanks to donations from Gilead and the US government. Prof. Amanda Rojek from the University of Oxford expressed her pride in the rapid establishment of the trial, contrasting it with the extensive delays seen during the West African outbreak from 2014-2016. “We’ve managed to achieve this in six weeks since the outbreak was first announced,” she remarked, highlighting the crucial role of local scientific leadership.

Importantly, it also includes participants of all ages, including pregnant and breastfeeding women, who are often excluded from such medical studies.
