President Donald Trump has dismissed intelligence reports attributing the latest cyber incursions to Iranian hackers, while experts are sounding alarms demanding Congress unlock federal support for beleaguered local governments. The Operational Technology Cybersecurity Coalition has called for a more robust response, emphasising that the recent attacks directly threaten a vital American necessity.
In March 2023, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a directive requiring states to collaborate with local officials to pinpoint weaknesses in water systems that hackers could exploit. However, this initiative faced legal challenges from attorneys general in several Republican-led states, ultimately leading to its withdrawal. Compounding the issue, the Trump administration has dismantled the very agency designed to respond to such threats, significantly reducing its workforce.
In a bid to revitalise federal efforts, Senator Adam Schiff introduced new legislation this week aimed at empowering the EPA to tackle water cybersecurity issues. “These threats are not hypothetical – they are happening right now,” Schiff emphasised. The proposed legislation seeks to provide the EPA with the necessary resources to protect critical infrastructure while alleviating the financial burden on local utilities.
