As Canada braces for an intense heat wave this week, pet owners must be vigilant about the well-being of their furry companions. Environment Canada has issued heat advisories for several regions, including parts of Ontario, Quebec, Alberta, and the Northwest Territories, with temperatures expected to reach up to 36°C in some areas. With the mercury rising, it is crucial to ensure that pets remain cool and comfortable in these extreme conditions.

Understanding the Heat Wave

A significant weather pattern is affecting much of the country, bringing with it oppressive heat that can be hazardous not only for people but also for pets. In southwestern Ontario, for instance, the humidex is predicted to climb to a staggering 45°C. In light of these forecasts, experts are urging pet owners to take proactive measures to protect their animals from the heat.

Keeping Pets Cool

Optimal Walking Times

When temperatures are at their peak, it’s advisable to limit outdoor activities for pets. Lucas Solowey, a spokesperson for the Toronto Humane Society, recommends walking dogs during the cooler parts of the day—early morning or late evening—to avoid overheating. Additionally, walking on hot pavement can cause burns to a dog’s paws. Solowey emphasises, “If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws.” Using protective footwear can offer some respite during these scorching days.

Air Conditioning and Indoor Comfort

The necessity of air conditioning during heat waves cannot be overstated. Dr. Shane Bateman, a professor at the University of Guelph, highlights that dogs lack sweat glands and rely on panting to cool themselves. If the surrounding air is too warm, this mechanism can lead to overheating. For pets that remain indoors, cooling measures such as air conditioning, fans, and engaging activities can help keep them comfortable. Solowey advises providing pets with puzzle feeders and treats to keep them entertained while staying inside.

Frozen Treats for Hydration

Providing frozen treats can be a clever way to help pets stay hydrated and cool. Blair Budgell from the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals suggests using ice cubes made from beef broth as a fun and refreshing snack for pets. These frozen treats can encourage increased water consumption, essential during hot weather.

The Dangers of Leaving Pets in Cars

One of the most dangerous mistakes pet owners can make during a heat wave is leaving their animals in vehicles. Budgell stresses the importance of never doing this, citing the rapid temperature increase inside cars, even with windows cracked or air conditioning running. Dr. Bateman adds that dogs often do not recognise the danger, which can lead to dire consequences.

Recognising Signs of Overheating

Pet owners should be vigilant for signs of overheating, which can include excessive panting, lethargy, or distress. If a pet exhibits these symptoms, immediate action is necessary. Dr. Bateman suggests using cool water to spray the animal and placing it in front of a fan to help it cool down. In cases of severe heat stress, such as vomiting or unresponsiveness, a visit to the veterinarian is critical.

Hydration is Key

Ensuring adequate hydration is essential for pets during heat waves. According to the University of Guelph, dogs generally require 60-80 ml of water per kg of body weight, while cats need 40-60 ml. Owners should always have fresh, clean water available and consider incorporating wet food into their pets’ diets to boost hydration levels.

Why it Matters

The implications of this heat wave extend beyond mere discomfort; they pose serious health risks for pets, particularly those vulnerable due to age, breed, or existing health conditions. Understanding how to mitigate these risks not only safeguards the well-being of our pets but also fosters a deeper bond between animals and their owners. As we navigate this challenging weather, prioritising the health and safety of our beloved companions is more important than ever.
