New research out of Denmark has suggested that a higher intake of vitamin D during pregnancy may yield slight cognitive advantages for children at the age of ten. The findings, while intriguing, warrant careful interpretation as they emerge from a study primarily aimed at investigating respiratory issues in offspring.
Study Overview: The Link Between Vitamin D and Cognitive Development
The Danish study tracked a group of children whose mothers participated in a randomised trial focused on the impact of vitamin D supplementation on respiratory conditions like wheezing and asthma. From the 24th week of pregnancy until a week after childbirth, one cohort of mothers received a daily supplement of 2,800 international units (IU) — significantly higher than the standard 400 IU, or 10 micrograms, recommended in Denmark.
By the time these children reached ten years old, 498 out of the original 623 participants underwent cognitive assessments. Results indicated that those exposed to the higher vitamin D dosage exhibited modest improvements in verbal and visual memory assessments. They performed somewhat better in tasks that required recalling words and objects, as well as remembering the locations of visual patterns.
The Nuances of Cognitive Testing
Despite these promising results, the enhancements in cognitive function were minor, and the study did not find a correlation between the higher dosage and improvements in intelligence, attention, or working memory. Moreover, the researchers did not investigate whether these cognitive differences translated into academic performance or everyday functioning.
While the initial findings appeared compelling, the researchers noted that one particular result regarding problem-solving abilities could not be confidently distinguished from random chance after adjusting for the number of tests conducted. Such caution is paramount in scientific research, particularly when considering the myriad of factors that influence cognitive development.
Strengths and Limitations of the Research
One of the study’s notable strengths lies in its randomised design, which mitigates the likelihood that socioeconomic status, health, or lifestyle differences among participants could skew the results. However, it is critical to remember that cognition was not the primary focus of the original trial, leading researchers to label this analysis as a “post-hoc secondary analysis.” This means that while the findings are noteworthy, they must be approached with a degree of skepticism.
Additionally, the study’s representation is limited by the demographic of the participants. With approximately 96% of the children being white, the applicability of the results to more diverse populations is uncertain. This is particularly significant in the UK, where individuals with darker skin are at a heightened risk for vitamin D deficiency due to lower synthesis from sunlight exposure.
Current Recommendations for Pregnant Women
The current guidance from the NHS recommends that expectant mothers consume 10 micrograms of vitamin D daily, particularly during the months with less sunlight. For those who spend limited time outdoors or tend to cover most of their skin, this dosage should be maintained throughout the year. Women from Black and ethnic minority backgrounds are also advised to consider consistent supplementation.
The dosage examined in the Danish study was seven times the standard NHS recommendation, which raises questions about the general applicability of the findings. While the higher intake remained below the adult upper limit of 100 micrograms a day, it does not imply that such a dosage is universally beneficial or appropriate for all pregnancies.

While the potential benefits of higher vitamin D intake are noteworthy, they underscore the necessity for further research.
