A recent report from the Met Office reveals that July 2026 has been the driest month on record for both England and Wales, amidst an unprecedented summer characterised by extreme heat and persistent drought conditions. With less than two millimetres of rain recorded in parts of Southern England, the month has set alarming precedents in the nation’s climate history.

A Month of Records

Southern England not only recorded its driest July but also its driest month overall, with the Met Office labelling it one of the “most notable summer months” since the institution began keeping records. The data indicates that England saw a mere 6.5mm of rainfall throughout July, which is merely 10% of the usual amount for this time of year. This figure starkly contrasts with the previous record low of 13.4mm set in 1911. Wales fared slightly better with 9.3mm of rain, but still only 9% of its historical average.

Across 19 counties in England, rainfall was so minimal that some areas reported less than 1mm for the entire month. Northern Ireland experienced its eighth driest July, with 26.9mm of rain—30% of the monthly average—while Scotland remained an exception, achieving 69% of its average rainfall.

In addition to the record low rainfall, both nations basked in an abundance of sunshine. England accumulated 305.6 hours of sunshine, surpassing the previous record of 294.8 hours from 1911, while Wales achieved 308.0 hours, eclipsing its prior record from 1955. Average temperatures also soared, with Wales tying its highest mean temperature of 17.8°C, last achieved in 2006, and England recording its second warmest July at 19.2°C, just shy of the 2006 record.

This extreme weather has not only led to drought but has also resulted in severe public health concerns. The series of heatwaves experienced throughout the summer, including two significant events in May and June, have contributed to over 2,800 excess deaths, highlighting the severe impact of rising temperatures on the populace.

As the current week progresses, temperatures are expected to peak again at around 33°C in the South East. Met Office chief forecaster Chris Bulmer indicated that while some regions might receive much-needed rain, others may see little relief from the drought.
