In a remarkable endeavour that intertwines history with cutting-edge technology, the Royal Canadian Geographical Society (RCGS) is preparing to explore the wrecks of two iconic polar exploration vessels. This expedition, which kicks off on Thursday, will utilise the submersible Alvin—renowned for its role in the discovery of the Titanic—to capture high-resolution imagery and create 3-D replicas of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Quest and Captain Robert Falcon Scott’s Terra Nova, both of which have long since sunk beneath the frigid waters of the North Atlantic.
A Journey into the Deep
The expedition will begin in the Labrador Sea before the team heads towards the waters off Greenland, a journey that has taken two years to meticulously plan. Leading the mission is John Geiger, CEO of the RCGS, who expressed his excitement about being among the first to witness these historical wrecks up close. “It’s going to be an incredible adventure—this will be the largest, most expensive, and most complicated expedition the geographical society has ever undertaken,” he stated.
Scheduled to set sail aboard the research vessel Atlantis on July 2, the expedition has been meticulously coordinated with the Massachusetts-based Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). The entire undertaking is expected to last several weeks, combining marine archaeology with the thrill of discovery.
The Legacy of Shackleton and Scott
Both Quest and Terra Nova are pivotal relics from the heroic age of polar exploration, connecting us to figures whose legacies continue to captivate the world. Shackleton, a celebrated Anglo-Irish explorer, tragically passed away during his final Antarctic expedition in 1922, while aboard Quest, which later sank off the coast of Labrador in 1962. The RCGS had previously discovered the wreck of Quest in 2024, but this expedition marks the first opportunity for a team to physically explore it.
Geiger noted the significance of the Quest wreck, stating, “Nobody has ever looked at Quest with their own eyes. I think it’ll be a very, very emotional moment to actually look at that ship and experience it directly.” Despite some alterations made to Quest during its service as a sealing vessel, the team hopes to uncover artefacts such as the original nameplate and possibly even seal pelts left behind when the ship was abandoned.
Scott’s Terra Nova, which carried him on his ill-fated journey to the South Pole in January 1912, met a similar fate. After a harrowing race against Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, Scott and his team perished on their return journey. Following its illustrious yet tragic history, Terra Nova was also repurposed for sealing operations and was ultimately sunk in 1943 after sustaining damage during World War II. The wreck was located by the Schmidt Ocean Institute in 2012, with footage captured showing the ship adorned with marine life.
Cutting-Edge Exploration Techniques
The upcoming expedition aims to utilise advanced imaging technology to create incredibly detailed 3-D models of both wrecks. Co-chief scientist David Mearns, a seasoned shipwreck explorer, emphasised the high-resolution imaging techniques that will allow the team to construct a true-scale replica of the submerged vessels. “You can manipulate it, rotate it, and zoom in, allowing for a level of study that feels as though you’ve drained the ocean,” Mearns explained.
The expedition will deploy a remote-controlled underwater vehicle alongside the submersible Alvin, providing a comprehensive view of both sites. Mearns highlighted the emotional weight of the mission, stating, “We will come to portions of the ship where we know Shackleton stood. We will come to places on Terra Nova where we know that Scott stood.”
