In a remarkable feat of maritime archaeology, an international expedition has successfully located and documented the wreck of Quest, the last vessel of famed polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton. The expedition, spearheaded by the Royal Canadian Geographical Society (RCGS), unveiled the ship’s site on the ocean floor of the Labrador Sea, where it has lain since its sinking in 1962. This groundbreaking mission, which relied on advanced technology and meticulous planning, aims to preserve the history surrounding Shackleton’s final journey and the legacy of exploration.
Discovery on the Ocean Floor
After two years of preparation, the expedition team reached the wreck site on a research vessel operated by the Massachusetts-based Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). On Monday, a remote-operated vehicle (ROV) captured the first clear images of Quest, revealing the vessel resting upright, adorned with marine life and surrounded by debris. The following day, a three-man team, including John Geiger, CEO of RCGS, descended 390 metres in the submersible Alvin. This vessel is renowned for its historic dives, including the first exploration of the Titanic wreck in 1986.
Reflecting on the moment he first laid eyes on the ship, Geiger described it as “a profound and remarkable experience.” He recounted the eerie sensation of approaching the ship’s outline, which emerged from the darkness like a ghostly apparition. “We were the first people to lay eyes on it since it sank,” he noted, emphasising the significance of the moment.
A Ship’s Legacy and Condition
Quest, originally a Norwegian sealing vessel, was acquired by Shackleton in 1921 for an ill-fated expedition to the Beaufort Sea, which was cancelled due to lack of funding. Shackleton’s final Antarctic voyage ended tragically in 1922 when he suffered a heart attack while the ship was anchored off South Georgia. Although the entire crew was rescued before the ship sank, Geiger revealed that the wreck has endured considerable damage over the years. It has been crushed by ice and now lies far from its original plunge point.
While exploring the wreck, Geiger observed one mast lying on the deck and speculated that he spotted an enamel washstand through a hole in the ship’s structure. The vessel is now encrusted with a variety of marine life, including anemones and pink coral, which have transformed it into a thriving habitat for fish. However, stray fishing nets posed a challenge, preventing the submersible from safely approaching certain parts of the wreck.
Preserving History for Future Generations
The expedition intends to conduct a comprehensive survey of Quest over the coming days. This will include the use of photogrammetric technology developed by Voyis Imaging, which will allow the team to create a detailed 3-D model of the wreck. This digital representation will serve as both a valuable resource for researchers and a visual testament to Shackleton’s enduring legacy. Furthermore, plans are underway to publish a book featuring photographs and accounts from the expedition, aiming to engage the public with this historical narrative.
Accompanying Geiger on the dive was Mark Pathy, a Canadian entrepreneur and the expedition’s chief mission specialist. He expressed hope that this exploration would inspire a new generation of adventurers to explore the planet’s hidden wonders. “There are undiscovered wonders to see and experience out there,” Pathy remarked, referencing the spirit of inquiry that Shackleton embodied.
Future Endeavours: The Quest Continues
Following their work at the Quest site, the expedition team plans to sail to Greenland to survey Terra Nova, the last ship of Captain Robert Falcon Scott. Like Quest, Terra Nova has its own storied history; it was the vessel used by Scott during his ill-fated South Pole expedition in 1912.
