The event, which takes place on Saturday, will see Lynch participating in a celebrity ball hockey match and leading a football clinic, showcasing an exciting blend of sports aimed at fostering inclusivity.
A Unique Collaboration
Marshawn Lynch, renowned for his explosive running style and memorable moments in the NFL, is no stranger to the HDA. He previously made headlines during the alliance’s WinterFest, which coincided with the NHL All-Star Game in Toronto two years ago. “I’m really excited about him and the football aspect of it,” remarked HDA chairman Akim Aliu. “Where we’re able to have success as an organization is tapping into the culture and personality aspects and using people’s audiences from different sports.”
The HDA was established in 2020 by a group of current and former NHL players of colour, aiming to combat racism and promote diversity within the sport. Their mission is to open the doors of hockey to minorities and underserved communities by providing free equipment, hosting clinics, and securing ice time for young players. This weekend’s event marks a significant milestone in their ongoing efforts.
Expanding the Mission
Akim Aliu revealed that the HDA has invested approximately US$1.1 million annually in grassroots initiatives. The organisation has successfully expanded its reach beyond Toronto, launching programmes in cities like Los Angeles, New York, Montreal, and Nova Scotia, with plans to include Calgary next month. This expansion reflects the HDA’s commitment to creating a more inclusive environment for aspiring athletes across Canada.
SummerFest is the highlight of the HDA’s calendar, featuring carnival rides, performances, and a fundraising gala in the evening. The event is expected to draw a crowd of over 4,000 participants, eager to engage with both hockey and football legends. Among the notable athletes scheduled to attend are Canadian Olympic sprinter Andre De Grasse, tennis champion Bianca Andreescu, former Seahawks tight end Luke Willson, and ex-Toronto Raptors forward Serge Ibaka.

Akim Aliu, who has a remarkable backstory himself—having moved from Nigeria to Ukraine before settling in Toronto—reflects on the impact of the HDA’s work. “Why I’m so proud of our work is because it’s really for the most vulnerable that would never have access to the sport,” he explained. The alliance’s efforts have positively influenced over 2,000 lives, with Aliu emphasising that their journey is just beginning. In 2022, a graphic novel titled “Akim Aliu: Dreamer,” co-published by Scholastic and the company of former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, further highlighted Aliu’s inspiring life story.
