The former NFL running back, renowned for his time with the Seattle Seahawks and his 2014 Super Bowl victory, will participate in a celebrity ball hockey game and lead a football clinic, further intertwining sports cultures in an effort to promote diversity and inclusion within the hockey community.
A Unique Fusion of Sports
Marshawn Lynch’s involvement marks a significant moment for the HDA, as it seeks to broaden its outreach and appeal by incorporating elements from other sports. Akim Aliu, chairman of the HDA, expressed enthusiasm about Lynch’s participation, stating, “I’m really excited about him and the football aspect of it. Where we’re able to have success as an organization is tapping into the culture and personality aspects and using people’s audiences from different sports.” This collaboration not only highlights the versatility of athletes but also illustrates the HDA’s commitment to fostering a diverse sporting environment.
The HDA, founded in 2020 by current and former NHL players of colour, aims to combat racism and intolerance while making hockey more accessible to underrepresented communities. Their initiatives provide free hockey equipment, organise clinics, and facilitate ice time for youth, all with the goal of breaking down barriers to participation in the sport.
Expanding Horizons
In its ongoing mission, the HDA has invested approximately US$1.1 million annually in grassroots programmes and has successfully expanded its reach beyond Toronto. The alliance has launched initiatives in cities including Los Angeles, New York, Montreal, and Nova Scotia, with plans to extend its impact to Calgary next month.
SummerFest serves as the flagship event for the HDA, showcasing not only hockey but also a carnival atmosphere with performances and attractions. The event culminates in a fundraising gala, designed to support the alliance’s initiatives and further its outreach to minority and underserved youth.
In addition to Lynch, the festival will feature prominent athletes such as Canadian Olympic sprinter Andre De Grasse, tennis sensation Bianca Andreescu, former NFL player Luke Willson, and former Toronto Raptors star Serge Ibaka. Aliu anticipates that the daytime festivities will draw a crowd exceeding 4,000 participants, illustrating the growing interest and support for the HDA’s mission.
A Personal Journey
Akim Aliu’s journey is particularly noteworthy. Born in Nigeria and raised in Ukraine, he discovered hockey upon moving to Toronto at the age of seven. His life story was recently transformed into a graphic novel, “Akim Aliu: Dreamer,” published by Scholastic and Colin Kaepernick’s publishing company, which highlights his experiences and the challenges faced by players of colour in the sport.
Reflecting on the HDA’s impact, Aliu remarked, “Why I’m so proud of our work is because it’s really for the most vulnerable that would never have access to the sport. Over 2,000 lives have been positively impacted by our work, and we’re just getting going.” His passion for making hockey accessible to all is evident in the alliance’s ongoing efforts to provide opportunities for youth who may not otherwise have the chance to engage with the sport.
