In a remarkable display of resilience and teamwork, Hernán Gil was successfully rescued after being trapped for eight days beneath the debris of a collapsed building in Venezuela, following devastating twin earthquakes that struck on June 24. Emergency responders worked tirelessly, managing to free him from more than 140 tonnes of rubble, amidst a backdrop of tragedy with nearly 2,300 confirmed fatalities and thousands still unaccounted for.
A Complex Rescue Operation
The operation to rescue Gil was described by a Chilean firefighter as “the most complex and technically difficult” he had ever encountered. Rescuers initially located Gil four days into the search, but it took an additional 100 hours of careful excavation to reach him. This extensive effort involved a coalition of international teams from countries including Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Mexico, Portugal, and the United States, all united in their mission to save the trapped security guard.
As the rescue progressed, a paramedic with the Costa Rican Red Cross, Allan Madrigal, recounted the moment he first heard Gil’s faint cries for help. “It was an emotional moment,” Madrigal shared, reflecting on the initial disbelief that the sounds were genuine. Gil’s situation was particularly remarkable due to the protective structure of the small concrete booth where he had been stationed at the Galerias Playa Grande mall. This booth acted as a shield, safeguarding him from the collapsing rubble. According to rescuers, he emerged from his ordeal without even a crushed nail, a testament to both luck and the skill of the rescuers.
Throughout the ordeal, Gil was provided with water and medical attention, including an intravenous drip. His positive spirit shone through even in dire circumstances; he requested specific flavours of hydration drinks and engaged in lively conversation with his rescuers, demonstrating a remarkable will to survive.

As rescuers continued to work, they faced numerous challenges, including the collapse of makeshift access ducts that posed risks to both Gil and the teams. Yet, the camaraderie that developed between Gil and the rescuers was uplifting. Marco Antonio Franco from the Mexican Red Cross described Gil as a “cheerful man,” noting how he encouraged the teams by recognising their efforts and expressing gratitude.
Madrigal, who was on his first international rescue mission, reflected on how the experience had transformed him: “The lad who came here a week ago is not the same one that will return to Costa Rica, believe me.”
