In a recent closed-door session with the House oversight committee, Howard Lutnick, the Secretary of Commerce, faced intense scrutiny regarding his connections to the late Jeffrey Epstein. Following the session, Democratic lawmakers did not hold back, labelling Lutnick’s performance as “embarrassing” and suggesting that former President Donald Trump would have dismissed him if he had witnessed the testimony.
Testimony Under Fire
During the questioning, Congressman Ro Khanna of California expressed his dismay, asserting, “If Donald Trump had seen the video transcript, he would have fired Howard Lutnick.” This statement reflects the gravity of the allegations surrounding Lutnick’s past associations with Epstein, who was convicted of sex crimes and had numerous ties to powerful figures.
Lawmakers highlighted discrepancies between Lutnick’s prior claims, made during interviews and podcasts, that he ceased all interactions with Epstein after 2005. However, new evidence from the Justice Department’s case files indicates Lutnick participated in events with Epstein as late as 2012. Specifically, he was present at a gathering at Epstein’s residence in 2011 and had a family lunch on Epstein’s private island in 2012, following Epstein’s 13-month jail sentence for procuring a minor for prostitution.
Inconsistent Accounts
Lutnick acknowledged the lunch during his testimony before the Senate Appropriations Committee on 10 February, where he remarked, “I did have lunch with him, as I was on a boat going across on a family vacation.” He maintained, however, that his dealings with Epstein were minimal and inconsequential.
Democratic Representative Suhas Subramanyam from Virginia noted Lutnick’s inability to recall specific details about his visit to Epstein’s island. “He couldn’t remember why he was there. Couldn’t remember anything he saw,” Subramanyam recounted, further fuelling scepticism about Lutnick’s assertions.

The hearing unearthed further frustration among lawmakers, particularly regarding Lutnick’s refusal to clarify whether he had consulted with Donald Trump prior to his testimony. Congresswoman Yassamin Ansari articulated her discontent, stating, “I feel very comfortable saying that Howard Lutnick is a pathological liar who is enabling the most egregious cover-up in American history.”
