Dr Shanglei Liu, an assistant professor of surgery at UC San Diego, who teleoperated the robot during the study, emphasised the practical benefits: “It’s a fraction of the cost and it takes a fraction of the space in an operating room. So it’s easy to deploy, anywhere from rural areas, to the battlefield, and even to space.”

This versatility opens up new possibilities for healthcare delivery, especially in locations where medical resources are scarce. The robots, affectionately named Surgie, were operated remotely by trained surgeons, though the research team envisions a future where advances in artificial intelligence could enable these robots to perform surgeries autonomously.

The Operating Theatre of Tomorrow

The researchers are committed to developing an integrated surgical team comprising both humanoid robots and human surgeons. “Many communities struggle with adequate staffing on the surgical team, which means patients are not being treated,” Dr Yip remarked. “Our goal is an operating theatre of the future, where humanoid robots and humans work side by side as an integrated team to deliver procedures to those in need, both in traditional hospital settings as well as in non-traditional, field medicine scenarios.”

The findings from this groundbreaking study were published in the journal Nature, under the title ‘In vivo feasibility study of humanoid robots in surgery’, further solidifying the importance of this research in pushing the boundaries of medical technology.
