She paid £65 for a one-hour Zoom consultation to assist her daughter Sophie in choosing between universities and exploring scholarship opportunities.

Admissions consultants offer a variety of services to assist students in their quest for university acceptance. Some engage in one-on-one coaching, while others conduct group workshops focusing on specific application aspects, such as essay writing and interview preparation. Many consultants work closely with students over extended periods to develop comprehensive application strategies, guiding them in showcasing their strengths and achievements effectively.
Mr. Nicholson emphasised the importance of starting the coaching process early, ideally in Grade 10 or 11. He mentioned that most students require a minimum of 10 hours of dedicated coaching to be adequately prepared. Youthfully offers packages starting at £1,500, with costs increasing based on the number of applications.
VerveSmith, another consultancy, provides various options, including hourly sessions or full programmes at a flat rate of £5,500, covering applications to institutions in Canada, the United States, and Europe. Mr. Salgado, a principal consultant at VerveSmith, noted that while early engagement offers advantages, student commitment and effort are ultimately the most critical factors in the success of their applications.
The Value of Personalised Guidance
While the average cost for Ms. Filipe’s services is £1,500 for three applications, her higher-tier programmes, which include more extensive support, can reach £3,000. Recognising the financial pressures on families, Youthfully has also developed an AI-driven platform designed to be an affordable alternative, available through a subscription model that mirrors typical mobile phone costs.
Parents are advised to seek consultants who adhere to professional guidelines and ethical standards. Mr. Salgado warned against those who emphasise prestige or guarantee admission to specific institutions. He and Mr. Nicholson both stress that consultants should not complete applications on behalf of students. Instead, the goal is to equip young applicants with the necessary skills and self-awareness to navigate the process independently.
The Importance of Finding the Right Fit
Elizabeth Dhuey, a professor at the University of Toronto, questions the necessity of hiring a consultant, citing her experiences in admissions. She argues that many aspects of the supplementary application process may not be as daunting as perceived. Furthermore, parents can sometimes feel undue pressure to secure places in top-tier universities, believing it will provide their children with a competitive edge in the job market.
Research suggests that while a field of study can influence long-term employment outcomes, the reputation of the university itself holds little weight in Canada. Ms. Filipe echoed this sentiment, noting that the increasing stress around university admissions is often exacerbated by social media portrayals of the U.S. educational system.

For instance, Ms. Hicks and her daughter discovered that a smaller university, Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario, was a better fit for her aspirations in biomedicine.
