In a landmark achievement for India’s burgeoning space sector, Skyroot Aerospace successfully launched its Vikram-1 rocket into orbit, marking the first orbital mission undertaken by a private Indian company. The launch took place on Saturday at 12:05 IST (06:35 GMT) from the Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) launch facility in Sriharikota. This accomplishment not only positions Skyroot as a leader in India’s commercial space landscape but also reflects the country’s growing aspirations in global space exploration.
A New Vision for Space Access
Skyroot Aerospace, which has recently attained a valuation of $1.1 billion, aims to revolutionise satellite launches with its innovative approach. Co-founder and CEO Pawan Kumar Chandana envisions a service that allows customers to “book a cab to space,” offering dedicated missions for small payloads. Current satellite operators often face long wait times—sometimes extending to years—before securing a launch opportunity. Skyroot’s model promises to mitigate these delays by enabling tailored missions that cater specifically to individual satellite requirements, akin to hailing an Uber for a quick trip rather than waiting for a train that operates on a fixed timetable.
Chandana emphasises that, “If you want to just go to a friend’s house, you don’t need a train; you book a cab.” This approach could significantly alter the dynamics of satellite deployment, granting operators the flexibility to choose their launch timings and destinations in orbit.
Celebrating Scientific Innovation
The Vikram-1 rocket, named in honour of Vikram Sarabhai, the architect of India’s space programme, boasts the capability to carry payloads of up to 350 kg. Its inaugural flight successfully placed six payloads into Low Earth Orbit, including a robotic arm designed for space debris removal, an Earth observation camera, and satellites from various international partners. Notably, the mission also included two unique symbolic payloads: a lotus crafted from lab-grown diamonds and a miniature gold rocket featuring micro-sculptures of three illustrious Indian scientists—Nobel Prize-winning physicist CV Raman, aerospace pioneer APJ Abdul Kalam, and Sarabhai himself.
Chandana highlighted the significance of these tributes, stating, “We exist because of the Indian space programme, and we stand on the shoulders of our early visionaries. This is our way of paying homage to three great scientists who shaped India’s space narrative.” The diamond lotus, named Cosmic Bloom, serves as an artistic tribute to the cosmos and is expected to resonate with the sentiment of the popular nursery rhyme, “like a diamond in the sky.”
Future Ambitions and Market Potential
Skyroot plans to conduct a total of two test flights this year, with commercial launches anticipated to commence in 2024. The company has the capacity to produce one rocket per month at its facility in Hyderabad, reinforcing its commitment to scaling operations swiftly. Since the Indian government liberalised the space sector in 2020, over 400 new space start-ups have emerged, with Skyroot standing out as the only unicorn in this rapidly expanding industry.
