In the breathtaking heights of the Himalayas, where temperatures plunge and rainfall is scarce, the village of Sakti is witnessing a remarkable transformation. Thanks to groundbreaking technology, local farmers are now harnessing the power of artificial ice pyramids to combat water shortages exacerbated by climate change. As traditional glaciers vanish, this inventive approach offers a glimmer of hope for agricultural sustainability in one of the most challenging environments on Earth.

The Climatic Challenge

Nestled at an altitude of nearly 4,000 metres, Sakti presents a formidable landscape for farming. Gelak Gutme, a seasoned farmer with 65 years of experience, encapsulates the harsh reality: “Ladakh has a brutal, single-cultivation season.” With climate change causing the retreat of vital glaciers, the region is increasingly transforming into a desert. Gutme lamented the loss of his entire crop last year due to water scarcity, showcasing the dire situation faced by local farmers.

For generations, the lower glaciers acted as natural reservoirs, releasing meltwater just in time for the spring planting season. However, as Lobzang Fardod, a member of the local water management committee, explains, the disappearance of these glaciers has left farmers without a reliable water source. The urgency is palpable, as crops must be planted by May to avoid the harsh winter that looms just around the corner.

The Birth of Artificial Ice Pyramids

In response to the dwindling water supply, residents of Ladakh began experimenting with innovative methods to create their own ice reservoirs in the early 2010s. By piping water from higher altitudes and spraying it into the cold air, villages managed to form towering structures of ice, known as ice stupas. These monumental creations provided essential meltwater during the crucial spring months.

However, the original system came with its own set of challenges. Managing ice stupas required farmers to brave freezing temperatures, often camping near water sources to address any blockages that could occur when temperatures plummeted. The situation became untenable as extreme cold could cause pipes to freeze and burst, leading to costly repairs and limited ice production.

Enter the Automated Ice Reservoir (AIR) System

Recognising the inefficiencies of the ice stupa system, local engineers partnered with the private company Acres of Ice to develop a more sophisticated solution. The Automated Ice Reservoir (AIR) system employs a computer-controlled process that optimises ice production while protecting the infrastructure from harsh winter conditions.

Dr. Suryanarayanan Balasubramanian, founder of Acres of Ice, describes the innovation: water is piped under pressure down from the mountains and expelled through vertical nozzles, creating a spectacular fountain-like effect. The system is powered by solar panels and features a weatherproof control box that monitors environmental conditions. If temperatures threaten to drop too low, the system can automatically drain standing water from the pipes, preventing freeze-related damage.

The AIR system is designed to be efficient and effective. Instead of continuously spraying water, it releases controlled bursts of mist that freeze, layer by layer, resulting in nearly complete conversion of diverted water into solid ice. This automated process not only enhances efficiency but also allows villagers to focus on their crops without the burden of constant maintenance.

A Brighter Agricultural Future

The impact of the AIR system is already being felt across the region. According to Murtaza Ali, an executive engineer with the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, villagers are reporting improvements in groundwater levels and the revival of spring water sources. Farmers like Gutme are now able to cultivate their fields with newfound hope, as the single AIR system has provided a more reliable water source.

Plans are already underway to deploy additional AIR projects across Ladakh, with the aim of multiplying the number of artificial glaciers. Balasubramanian notes their ambition to refine the technology further, potentially allowing the construction of multiple ice reservoirs where only one was previously feasible.
