In a remarkable fusion of sustainability and design, Melbourne-based furniture designer Joanne Odisho has clinched the esteemed Australian Furniture Design Award with her innovative Mod-u lamp collection, crafted from discarded eggshells. From Waste to Wonder: The Journey of the Mod-u Lamps
Odisho’s journey began in 2022 during her studies at RMIT, where she was challenged to create a product using food waste. Initially experimenting with coffee grounds, she quickly pivoted to eggshells after discovering their remarkable properties. Collecting thousands of these discarded shells from local cafés, Odisho sterilises and dries them before transforming them into a fine powder using a Nutribullet. This seemingly mundane waste material becomes the foundation for her groundbreaking designs.
The crushed eggshells are then mixed with a biopolymer, resulting in a composite that Odisho describes as akin to “wet sand.” This unique blend is poured into moulds and allowed to cure naturally over the course of a week. While she remains tight-lipped about the specifics of her setting agent to protect her innovative approach, she assures that the process is completely biodegradable. The final product is not only cost-effective and durable but also showcases the natural hues of the eggshells, free from artificial dyes.
A New Dimension of Design
The Mod-u lamps are more than mere lighting fixtures; they are dynamic, modular creations that invite interaction. Comprising numerous reconfigurable blocks, each lamp can be rearranged to suit the user’s aesthetic preferences. Odisho likens the material to stone in its sturdiness once dried, allowing for a range of design configurations—from table lamps to striking floor lamps.
Tony Russell, brand director at Stylecraft and a juror for the award, expressed his admiration for Odisho’s ingenuity.
