A groundbreaking initiative in south London is helping patients improve their health by addressing financial difficulties directly within GP surgeries. The “Back on Track” programme, operating in 34 practices across Lambeth and Southwark, has demonstrated significant success, with one-third of patients reporting reduced visits to their GP after receiving financial advice. Over 1,100 individuals have managed to secure benefits, eliminate debts, or alleviate stress as a result of this innovative approach.
A Personal Journey to Recovery
Among those benefiting from the scheme is 62-year-old Ife, a resident of Stockwell. Ife has been living with chronic arthritis pain, which forced her to leave her job due to mobility issues while she awaited knee replacement surgery. Compounding her struggles, she fell into energy debt after her claim for Capability Benefit was denied, leaving her feeling overwhelmed and despondent.
When Ife learned about the Back on Track initiative through her GP, she was connected with a financial support link worker who assisted her in successfully appealing the Universal Credit decision. This support not only helped her secure disability benefits but also enabled her to establish an affordable payment plan for her energy and water debts. Ife expressed her gratitude, stating, “When the doctors’ surgery told me about Back on Track, it was such a relief. The complex PIP and UC claims forms were very stressful – I really wouldn’t have managed financially without my link worker’s support. I’m so happy now; I referred a couple of friends in similar situations. I still see my GP occasionally, but hardly anything compared to before.”
The Impact of Financial Stress on Health
Michael Parsons, who leads the project, emphasised the significant correlation between financial stress and health. The initiative, known as the Financial Shield and supported by the foundation Impact on Urban Health, aims to alleviate pressure on GPs while demonstrating how addressing financial concerns can lead to better health outcomes. According to the foundation, more than half of the participants in the programme reported improvements in their health after receiving tailored support, including assistance with benefits claims and debt management.
Dr. Vikesh Sharma, a GP involved in the scheme, shared a poignant case study that illustrates the impact of financial worries on health. He described a woman in her 40s who frequently visited the surgery for heart palpitations, driven by anxiety and stress related to her rent and debts. After identifying the root cause of her symptoms and providing her with financial support, her health significantly improved. “Without that offer of specialist help, how could I have centred financial health in her care?” Dr. Sharma reflected. “Six months later, she returned, realising how stress had affected her health and was taking steps to improve it.”
A Model for Future Health Care
The Financial Shield project aims not only to enhance individual health outcomes but also to transform how healthcare providers approach patient care. By integrating financial support into the healthcare model, GPs can concentrate on treating the underlying medical issues rather than solely addressing the symptoms of stress and anxiety linked to financial instability. This method is both cost-effective and preventative, leading to fewer GP visits and better overall health.
In response to the programme’s success, the NHS has indicated that any decisions regarding its broader rollout will be made locally, depending on the specific needs of different health systems. The government’s Ten-Year Health Plan also highlights a commitment to integrating debt support into neighbourhood health services, reflecting a growing recognition of the interconnectedness of health and financial wellbeing.
Why it Matters
The Back on Track programme exemplifies a vital shift in healthcare, recognising that addressing financial hardship is crucial to improving health outcomes. By supporting patients in managing their finances, healthcare providers can not only enhance individual lives but also reduce the overall strain on healthcare systems. This holistic approach could serve as a model for future initiatives, fostering a healthier population that can thrive both physically and financially.
