Via Rail has unveiled an ambitious plan aimed at streamlining long-distance train travel for passengers connecting to one of Canada’s busiest airports. The Crown corporation announced on Wednesday its initiative to construct a new integrated transit hub in Dorval, Quebec, which will link Via Rail services, exo trains, and shuttle operations to Montreal’s Trudeau International Airport.

“This project is about consolidating all transportation options under one roof, creating a comprehensive transit solution for residents and visitors alike,” stated Karl Helou, a spokesperson for Via Rail. He emphasised that the aim is to enhance the overall travel experience, making it more convenient for everyone traversing the city.

Addressing Fragmentation in Transit

Currently, the transit system in Dorval is considered “fragmented,” requiring passengers connecting from Via Rail to exo trains to navigate an underpass and cross several roads to reach their transfer points. This disjointed arrangement has been a source of frustration for many commuters. Local resident Paul Parisien expressed optimism about the integrated hub, remarking, “That would be fantastic. If we could connect it with the REM [light rail], we would have a fully integrated public transportation system.”

Dorval’s Mayor, Marc Doret, has openly backed the project, noting the challenges people face in navigating the current setup. “Getting around the area is quite difficult at the moment. Bringing everything together into a single central location will greatly simplify the process for users,” he told Global News.

A Vision for Integrated Mobility

The proposed transit hub aims to encourage a shift from car dependency to public transport usage. Helou highlighted that “integrated mobility is a proven concept,” asserting that when transportation options are user-friendly and straightforward, people are more likely to utilise them. “For every transportation need, there is a transportation option,” he added optimistically.

Plans indicate that the existing Via Rail station on the south side of the CN tracks will be replaced by a new bimodal station situated on the north side, adjacent to the current exo stop. The design includes an overpass to ensure uninterrupted service for both Via Rail and exo trains, which Helou assured would enhance accessibility and overall passenger experience.

Project Timeline and Funding

While Via Rail has secured funding from the Government of Canada, a final budget for the project has not yet been established. The timeline for completion remains unclear; however, Helou indicated that construction could span anywhere from two to five years.

As Dorval prepares for this significant transit overhaul, the community is hopeful that the new hub will not only improve connectivity within the city but also serve as a model for future transportation initiatives across Canada.

Why it Matters

The development of an integrated transit hub in Dorval is not merely a local enhancement; it represents a crucial step toward modernising public transport in Canada. By simplifying the journey for passengers and promoting the use of sustainable transit options, this initiative could significantly reduce traffic congestion, lower emissions, and encourage a cultural shift towards more environmentally friendly travel choices. As cities worldwide grapple with the challenges of urban mobility, Dorval’s approach may serve as a blueprint for other regions aiming to create seamless connections between various modes of transportation.
