Montreal police have initiated an investigation into a suspected hate crime following the discovery of a disturbing package outside the Islamic Centre of Verdun on Sunday. The package reportedly contained an imitation severed human hand, smeared with fake blood, causing significant alarm within the community.
Disturbing Discovery
At approximately 2:30 p.m., emergency services received a 911 call from an individual who reported the suspicious package left at the entrance of the Islamic centre. Responding officers confirmed the presence of a plastic bag containing an object covered in a red substance, which is currently undergoing forensic analysis.
The Islamic Centre of Verdun serves as both a mosque and a community hub, providing essential religious services, educational programmes, and social gatherings. At the time of the incident, the centre was hosting a weekend event attended by families, including many children, which heightened the sense of fear among those present.
Community Response
The Canadian Muslim Forum expressed deep concern over the incident. In a statement, they highlighted the fear experienced by children and families, noting, “A place of worship and community gathering was turned into a scene of anxiety and intimidation.” They further emphasised that this incident is reflective of a broader pattern of rising Islamophobia and divisive rhetoric targeting Canadian Muslims.
The police have since conferred with the centre’s director and have assigned the case to their hate crimes and incidents unit. Investigators are currently reviewing surveillance footage from the area in an effort to identify any suspects involved. As of now, no arrests have been made, and the inquiry is ongoing.

Statistics from March indicate a worrying trend in hate crimes across Canada. Reports to law enforcement revealed an increase from 1,817 incidents in 2018 to a staggering 4,882 in 2024. Particularly alarming is the near tripling of Islamophobic incidents, which escalated from 84 reported cases to 229 over the same period.
