Since 2022, incidents of tree poisoning have escalated, with officials now linking a total of 28 trees poisoned at Burnt Cedar beach to a series of earlier attacks. In 2022, six trees were targeted; another six were damaged in 2024, and the latest discovery of 16 affected trees occurred this August.
Darin Balaam, the Washoe County Sheriff, expressed the seriousness of the situation. “We take these crimes very seriously and will utilise every available resource to identify and apprehend the person or persons responsible,” he stated. The deliberate destruction of mature trees presents not only a financial burden but also considerable environmental harm.

The most recent incidents were reported in late July and early August. On 24 July, deputies were called to the beach after a strong chemical odour was noted near a large pine tree. Soil samples taken from the vicinity revealed a smell consistent with previous poisoning incidents. Further inspections on 2 August uncovered additional trees with a suspicious substance around their bases.
Authorities suspect that the acts of poisoning occurred between 11:30 AM on 1 August and 5 AM on 2 August. Investigators are currently analysing the substance used to determine its nature and whether it matches the materials found during prior incidents. In some cases, signs of foul play were evident, including drilled holes near the roots of the afflicted pines.
