Sebastian Sawe, the first athlete to officially complete a marathon in under two hours, has returned to Kenya to a rapturous reception in his hometown. Sawe’s remarkable achievement, clocking in at 1 hour, 59 minutes, and 30 seconds at the London Marathon last weekend, has sparked celebrations across the nation, culminating in an emotional homecoming filled with joy and pride.
A Hero’s Welcome in Eldoret
On Thursday, Sawe touched down in Eldoret aboard a military aircraft typically reserved for special operations, marking his return to the high-altitude region that has produced numerous world-class distance runners. As he emerged from the plane, a scene of jubilation unfolded. His wife, Lydia, stood waiting at the airport with a stunning bouquet of orange roses, her hands trembling with anticipation. When they finally embraced, tears of joy flowed down her cheeks as she whispered, “Congratulations, darling.”
The festivities began immediately as Sawe, who shattered the previous world record by an impressive 65 seconds, was met with a warm welcome from family, friends, and local officials. He signed a visitor book inside the airport’s VIP lounge before receiving a traditional wreath made from the sinendet plant, symbolising victory in his Kalenjin culture. In a celebratory gesture, Lydia offered him fermented milk from a gourd, a customary drink to commemorate special occasions.
A Victory for All
Addressing the crowd gathered at the airport, Sawe expressed his gratitude, stating, “The victory that took place last Sunday was not just my victory, it was a victory for all of us.” His words resonated deeply within the community, which has long embraced the running culture that thrives in the region. “I’m so happy to be home and welcomed this much; I’m so grateful,” he added, underscoring the collective pride felt by those who supported him.
Eldoret has become synonymous with distance running excellence, with its residents often producing athletes capable of extraordinary feats. The high altitude of the area, approximately 2,150 metres above sea level, naturally enhances the red blood cell count in local runners, providing them with a significant advantage when competing at lower elevations.
Celebrations Across the Region
Sawe’s grandmother, Vivian Kimaru, a former Olympian herself, shared her pride for her grandson’s accomplishment. “I competed in Munich’s 1972 Olympic Games in 1500 and 800m and reached the semi-final,” she reminisced, her voice filled with emotion. The celebrations continued in Sawe’s village of Ndonyongaria, where locals gathered under marquees to feast on traditional dishes while music and dance filled the air.
In a lavish event hosted at the presidential residence, President William Ruto, who hails from the same Kalenjin community as Sawe, lauded the runner’s achievement as a pivotal moment in the annals of human endurance. He presented Sawe with two cheques totalling 8 million shillings (approximately £46,000), one for winning the marathon and another for breaking the world record. In a symbolic exchange, Sawe gifted the president one of his racing shoes, inscribed with his record time.
Running as a Path to Prosperity
In Eldoret, running is not merely a sport; it represents a pathway to prosperity for many aspiring athletes. The region has produced some of the world’s fastest marathoners, with local runners motivated by the potential for wealth through sponsorships and athletic scholarships. Emmy Biwott, the director of Uasin Gishu County government primary school, remarked, “Athletes are our cash crop,” highlighting how integral running is to the local economy.
Toby Tanser, an author and founder of the charity Shoe4Africa, noted that the desire for a better life drives many athletes. “You won’t see fun runners here. People run to escape poverty; nearly every famous Kenyan runner has come from a village setting,” he explained.
Why it Matters
Sebastian Sawe’s historic achievement transcends the realm of sports; it embodies the aspirations of an entire community and nation. His victory resonates with countless individuals who view athletics as a means to a brighter future, inspiring a new generation of runners to dream big. As Kenya continues to produce remarkable talent, Sawe’s success serves as a testament to the power of perseverance and the collective spirit of a people united in pursuit of excellence.
