The tragic deaths of 15 elephants in Kenya have sparked urgent scrutiny, with preliminary investigations suggesting that pesticides used on nearby tomato farms may be to blame. Between late June and late July, these majestic creatures were found dead in the vicinity of Amboseli National Park, raising alarm among conservationists, local farmers, and wildlife officials.
The Scourge of Pesticides
The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has reported that some of the deceased elephants exhibited signs of “partial paralysis,” indicative of potential poisoning, possibly from cyanide-based pesticides. Dr. Isaac Lekolool, the chief veterinary officer for KWS, revealed that traces of cyanide were detected in the digestive systems of the animals. While he did not dismiss the possibility of deliberate poisoning, he acknowledged the complexity of the situation: “It’s difficult to tell because we’ve not seen these kinds of cases before. It is almost like a one-off, and it was within a period of about a month.”
Farmers in the Kimana region, who are situated along a critical migratory route for elephants between Amboseli National Park and Tsavo National Park, have expressed disbelief about the sudden spike in elephant deaths. Daniel Nina, representing local landowners, remarked, “We have coexisted with this wildlife for decades and have never experienced this. So why is it happening now?”
The Tomato Farming Context
The tomato farms in question thrive thanks to irrigation from streams originating from Mount Kilimanjaro, supplying markets in Nairobi and beyond. However, concerns about pesticide use have long been prevalent in the area. A recent report by the Route to Food initiative highlighted that some local farmers have been using insecticides containing cyanide, a substance that is illegal in Kenya but finds its way into the country through smuggling from Tanzania.
Wangunyu Njuguna, the report’s author, noted the lack of enforcement regarding agricultural chemical standards, saying, “There is no one checking what I go and buy across the border, so I can just go buy anything and walk through the border and no one stops me.” This regulatory failure has allowed hazardous substances to proliferate on Kenyan farms, posing significant risks not only to wildlife but also to human health.
Diverging Opinions Among Experts
While KWS has pointed to pesticides as a probable cause of the elephant deaths, many conservationists remain sceptical. Paula Kahumbu, a prominent figure in wildlife conservation with nearly three decades of experience, questioned the validity of the pesticide hypothesis. “We haven’t got enough detailed information to have confidence in this claim that it’s due to pesticides in crops,” she asserted.
Critics have pointed out that only one of the 15 elephants was an adult male, suggesting that the theory doesn’t align with typical elephant behaviour. They argue that male elephants are more likely to raid farms than females or calves, thus raising questions about the pesticide theory’s consistency. Moreover, Nina pointed out that previous poisoning incidents have predominantly affected zebras and antelopes, not elephants, leading to further confusion over the cause of these deaths.
The Bigger Picture
The ongoing human-wildlife conflict in Kenya is exacerbated by increasing agricultural encroachment on wildlife habitats. Local farmers, like Stephen Michael from Kimana, have shared their frustrations about elephants raiding their crops, resulting in significant financial losses. “The last time elephants came, they destroyed cabbages and tomatoes. I lost cabbages worth almost $1,535,” he lamented.
Frank Pope, CEO of Save the Elephants, highlighted that the pressures on elephants have shifted from poaching for ivory to land use conflicts. “People are moving into areas where there’s enough water to grow crops and fertile soils, and those are the very areas that the elephants tend to use as well,” he explained.
