In a case that has sent shockwaves through the tight-knit community of Key West, a 60-year-old businessman has been found guilty of murder for the shooting of a 21-year-old man. Lloyd Preston Brewer III shot Garrett Hughes after the young man allegedly urinated on a wall behind Brewer’s property during Super Bowl celebrations in 2023. The conviction, which could see Brewer spend the rest of his life behind bars, highlights the grave consequences of violent confrontations over seemingly trivial disputes.

The Night of the Incident

The tragic events unfolded shortly after midnight on February 13, 2023, behind Brewer’s establishment, Conch Town Liquor & Lounge, located at 3340 North Roosevelt Boulevard. Reports indicate that both Brewer and Hughes had been drinking at the bar while watching the Kansas City Chiefs claim victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl. After the game, Hughes stepped outside and urinated against the rear wall of the building, triggering Brewer’s violent response.

Prosecutors detailed how Brewer confronted Hughes before pulling out his firearm and firing a single shot that struck the young man in the torso. Brewer claimed he acted in self-defence, stating he feared for his life as he observed a crowd gathering in the parking lot and believed Hughes was reaching for something. However, this narrative was systematically dismantled by the prosecution.

Evidence Contradicts Self-Defence Claim

In a gripping courtroom battle, Assistant Monroe County State Attorney Joseph Mansfield presented surveillance footage and eyewitness accounts that painted a different picture. The video revealed Brewer moving towards Hughes, turning away momentarily, and then returning with his weapon drawn. Mansfield argued that Hughes was not armed and posed no genuine threat, thereby nullifying Brewer’s claims of self-defence.

“He came at me in a threatening manner and appeared he was reaching for something on his side,” Brewer told police, but Mansfield firmly rebutted: “There is no justifiable claim to self-defence because the kid was never armed and never advanced on the shooter; the shooter advanced on him.” Following the shooting, Hughes was rushed to Lower Keys Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Community Outrage and Sentencing Ahead

The impact of Hughes’ death reverberated throughout the community, especially as he was the son of John Hughes, the coach of Key West High School’s football team. The killing has been described as an act of senseless violence, shocking the beach town known for its laid-back atmosphere. Major Crimes Assistant State Prosecutor Colleen Dunne emphasised the deliberate escalation of the confrontation, stating, “This case showed a conscious and deliberate decision to escalate a confrontation into deadly violence.”

Brewer is set to be sentenced on February 26, 2026, and remains in custody as the community grapples with the aftermath of this tragic incident.

Why it Matters

This case underscores the dangers inherent in allowing minor disputes to spiral into lethal confrontations. It serves as a stark reminder of how quickly situations can escalate, leading to irrevocable consequences. The conviction not only seeks justice for Garrett Hughes but also sends a message about the importance of de-escalation and the serious implications of gun violence in everyday life. As communities reflect on this tragedy, the need for responsible conflict resolution has never been more pressing.
