The chief executive of Allwyn UK, the operator of the National Lottery, will resign next month following a significant technological overhaul that has transformed the organisation. Andria Vidler, who has been at the helm for almost three years, announced her departure after reaching an agreement with chairman Justin King. Phil Walker, a former executive at William Hill, will take over as interim CEO starting 7 September.
A Transformative Era Comes to an End
Vidler’s leadership has been marked by what the company describes as a “long-overdue transformation.” She joined Allwyn’s UK operations in October 2023, just before the firm officially took over the National Lottery licence from Camelot in early 2024. However, her tenure faced challenges, including legal disputes that delayed the migration to a new technology provider, which were largely beyond Allwyn’s control.
These setbacks affected the introduction of new draw-based games and the initial funding for charitable causes under the new licence. Nevertheless, this year marked a significant milestone as Allwyn completed a £450 million tech upgrade. This extensive project involved migrating 18 million player records and over three billion historical transactions to modern platforms. The overhaul also included updates to the lottery’s website and mobile applications, as well as enhancements to the technology used by retail partners.
Moving Forward with a New Vision
The completion of this technological transformation has set the stage for the biggest revamp of the Lotto game since its inception in 1994. This summer, Allwyn launched a UK-specific version of Powerball, the world’s largest jackpot game, marking the first new draw-based game in the National Lottery’s history.
In discussing her departure, Vidler expressed her pride in leading Allwyn during such a crucial time. “It has been a huge privilege to lead Allwyn UK through such an important period for the National Lottery. The last three years have required enormous focus and commitment from colleagues right across the business, and I am proud of what we have delivered together,” she stated. Vidler further noted that now was the appropriate moment to hand over leadership to someone who can push for further growth.
New Leadership to Propel Growth
Phil Walker’s appointment as interim CEO is expected to help steer Allwyn into its next growth phase while the company searches for a permanent successor. Walker brings a wealth of experience from his six years at William Hill, where he held various senior roles, including chief commercial officer and managing director for the UK and Ireland.
Chairman Justin King praised Vidler for her contributions during her time in charge. “Since Andria joined us, she has led from the front through an intense period of change, helping to complete the much-needed and long-overdue transformation of the National Lottery,” King remarked. He expressed optimism for the future, stating that the foundation has been laid for ongoing growth and modernisation of the National Lottery.
Why it Matters
The departure of Andria Vidler signifies a pivotal moment for Allwyn UK and the National Lottery at large. With a major technology upgrade completed and ambitious plans for new games on the horizon, the organisation is poised for a new chapter. As the National Lottery continues to evolve, the leadership transition will be crucial in ensuring that it meets the expectations of players, retailers, and charitable causes. The future of the National Lottery is now in the hands of a new leader, and all eyes will be on how they build upon the solid groundwork laid in recent years.
