A man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the brutal rape of a Sikh woman in her own home, a crime marked by a disturbing display of religious hatred. John Ashby, 32, subjected the victim to a horrifying ordeal last October, which culminated in a violent assault fuelled by racist abuse. The Birmingham Crown Court has now imposed a minimum term of 14 years following a trial that exposed the grim details of the attack.
A Violent Assault in Walsall
The court heard how Ashby, who was homeless at the time and had recently been discharged from psychiatric care, followed the woman after she alighted from a bus. Upon entering her property in Walsall, he unleashed a torrent of physical and verbal abuse, wielding a stick to beat her. Ashby shouted racist slurs as he assaulted her, asserting his dominance in a chilling manner by claiming to be a “British master”.
Despite the victim’s desperate screams for help, Ashby forced his way into her bathroom. He attempted to strangle her while continuing to hurl racial and religious insults throughout the attack, which lasted approximately 24 minutes. The heinous nature of Ashby’s actions prompted High Court judge Mr Justice Pepperall to label him a “deeply unpleasant racist and Islamophobe” during sentencing.
Change of Plea Amid Strong Evidence
Initially denying the charges, Ashby dramatically changed his plea to guilty on the second day of the trial. The evidence against him was substantial, including DNA and fingerprints collected from the scene, as well as identification by the victim during an identity parade. Prosecutor Phil Bradley KC highlighted Ashby’s prior criminal history, which includes ten previous convictions for a total of 18 offences, mainly related to drug abuse and mental health issues.
The prosecution’s case was bolstered by CCTV footage and witness testimonies, which clearly established a pattern of Ashby’s violent behaviour. Senior Crown Prosecutor Rav Dhillon remarked on the deeply disturbing nature of the crime, emphasising that it was motivated by religious hatred against an innocent woman in her own sanctuary.

Following the sentencing, Judge Pepperall addressed the victim and her partner, expressing admiration for their bravery in the face of such trauma. He expressed hope that, with time and support, they would be able to rebuild their lives after enduring such a horrific experience.
As the court proceedings concluded, Ashby’s actions were condemned not only for the violence inflicted but also for the underlying prejudice that fuelled the attack. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) reiterated the importance of addressing crimes motivated by hatred, stating that no individual should endure such violence due to their background.
