In a heartwarming display of community spirit, Caserne 26 in Notre-Dame-de-l’Île-Perrot, Quebec, underwent a remarkable transformation on Thursday, becoming a blood donation clinic for the day. This initiative held particular significance for firefighter Ryan Langton, as his daughter Chiara is one of the many children who have benefitted from blood donations during her battle with cancer.
A Personal Connection to Blood Donation
Ryan Langton emphasised the critical importance of blood donations, stating, “A lot of people don’t really know what their blood (donation) goes to. It’s not just her [Chiara] — it’s many other children at the Montreal Children’s Hospital and Ste. Justine’s who need blood to fight their cancer.” The event served as a reminder of how individual contributions can profoundly impact the lives of others, particularly during vulnerable times.
Chiara first captured the public’s attention in 2024 when she was just three years old, bravely recovering from leukemia. Her family believed they had overcome the toughest challenges when they were devastated by the news of her cancer’s return last year. “To get that news after I had gone back to work — we had just restarted — it was an absolute punch in the gut,” lamented Chiara’s mother, Christine Clogg. The family’s world was turned upside down once again.
The Ongoing Battle Against Cancer
Following the recurrence of her illness, Chiara underwent a series of grueling treatments, including chemotherapy, a bone marrow transplant, and eventually, CAR-T cell therapy. Despite the hardships, moments of joy punctuated her journey. The young girl continued to find happiness in small things, such as dancing to her favourite Taylor Swift songs.
Blood transfusions played a crucial role in supporting Chiara throughout her treatment. “She received over 20 transfusions of blood and platelets,” Clogg explained. “Sometimes it was twice a day; her body just wasn’t holding platelets. So she was constantly getting transfused to keep her at a healthy level.”
Today, Chiara is finally on the mend. Having been out of the hospital for several months, she is eagerly preparing for kindergarten this autumn and has even joined a local swim team.
Inspiring Others to Donate
While the Langton family may never meet the individuals whose donations helped sustain Chiara, they hope that by sharing their story, more people will be inspired to participate in blood drives. “She’s the happiest little kid ever,” Ryan Langton said. “She doesn’t think about it (getting needles as a blood recipient); it’s just something she has to do. And if she can do it, I think anyone is able to do it. So don’t be afraid to become a donor. You’ll feel really good about yourself at the end.”
Their message is clear: every donation counts, especially when it comes to saving lives.
Why it Matters
The Langton family’s experience underscores the vital role of blood donations in the fight against cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. Blood drives not only fulfil an urgent medical need but also foster a sense of community and solidarity. By participating, individuals can contribute to a cause that directly impacts the health and well-being of children like Chiara, reminding us all that collective action can lead to significant change and hope in the lives of those facing adversity.
