Uber has launched the United Kingdom’s first robotaxi service, putting 15 autonomous Ford Mustang electric vehicles on London roads. Each car carries a safety driver ready to take control if needed, fares match those of a standard UberX trip, and more than 100,000 Londoners told the firm they would choose a driverless ride if it were available.

How the Service Works

The minicabs are fitted with Wayve’s driverless car technology, which analyses live data from rooftop sensors and other sources to decide its moves in real time, without relying on fixed routes. Uber said the UK fare for a robotaxi journey will be identical to that of an UberX, Uber Electric or Uber Comfort ride, with upfront prices shown in the app. The self‑driving option only appears after a booking is made and a vehicle is nearby.

Sarfraz Maredia, Uber’s global head of autonomous mobility and delivery, explained the long‑term vision: “We always want consumers to be able to request a human ride or an autonomous vehicle, and because the market’s growing, we expect that there will be human drivers on Uber London for a long time to come,” he said.

Christina Calderator, director of transport strategy and policy at TfL, echoed the cautious approach: “This is something that’s new, it’s coming to London – we need to make sure it’s safe,” she said.

Unions have urged prudence. David McMullen, senior organiser for the GMB trade union, warned that “caution needed to be taken with the roll‑out of driverless cars unless people were ‘prepared to see unprecedented levels of social and economic disruption’.” He called on TfL and the government to devise a plan that “protects drivers” and said that without such safeguards, moving to driverless services would be “premature”.

Experts highlighted lingering technical hurdles. Prof Siddartha Khastgir, head of safe autonomy at the University of Warwick’s Warwick Manufacturing Group, noted: “As human drivers we tend to make a very conscious decision of what we believe is right, and sometimes actually do things that are not perfectly legal – so for example, we tend to mount the kerb to give way to an ambulance,” he said. “So, how does a self‑driving vehicle respond to emergency services? And what are the nuances of doing that in a crowded place like London?”

Meanwhile, rivals are watching closely. Waymo, Google’s autonomous car arm, has been mapping London’s streets for months with safety drivers aboard, while Chinese tech giant Baidu is also preparing a UK trial. The race to bring reliable self‑driving taxis to the capital is well and truly underway.
