In a delightful tale that blends humour with heartfelt emotion, Mina Alali shares her life with Merlin, her charming Vietnamese pot-bellied pig. This unique bond not only enriches her everyday experiences but also played a pivotal role in her romantic journey, leading to her engagement. Merlin’s antics and intelligence have captured the hearts of many, making him an internet sensation with a loyal following.

The Beginning of a Beautiful Friendship

Mina’s fascination with pigs began long before she welcomed Merlin into her life. Living in Sacramento, California, her home is a vibrant menagerie, including a dog, two chicks, a pigeon, a bearded dragon, three rats, and two rescue cows. However, it was the pig that stole her heart.

“I remember visiting animal sanctuaries and feeling a deep connection to the pigs,” Mina recalls. “I knew how intelligent they were and promised myself that one day I would have one.”

In March 2020, that promise became a reality when she adopted Merlin, a tiny bundle of joy just two and a half months old. From day one, his personality shone through. He is a cuddly companion but can also be quite cheeky, often making his presence known by unplugging devices or slamming doors when things don’t go his way.

A Pig with Personality

Merlin’s antics are nothing short of entertaining. Weighing in at 180 pounds, he behaves like an oversized toddler, complete with a penchant for wearing a propeller cap during walks. Despite living in an apartment, Mina was never worried about noise complaints—his squeals can be deafening, particularly when he’s feeling peckish or frustrated.

Recognising Merlin’s intelligence, Mina began training him early on. Within just ten minutes, he mastered tricks like spinning, shaking, and high-fiving, especially when treats are involved. His favourite snacks are fruits, with bananas reigning supreme.

Merlin communicates with Mina via a series of 25 buttons, each programmed to play recordings of her voice. These buttons allow him to express his needs, whether it’s a request for a vegetable treat or calling for their pet pigeon, Al Capone, to join him for a ride. This innovative form of communication has garnered a significant online following, with Merlin recently achieving a Guinness World Record for the most Instagram followers for a pig, boasting 1.1 million fans, now 1.2 million.

Love Blossoms Through a Pig’s Charm

Merlin’s impact on Mina’s life extends beyond companionship; he also played a crucial role in her romantic journey. Through a video of Merlin, her fiancé reached out to Mina, declaring, “I want to marry you.” A year later, they were engaged, underscoring the profound connections animals can foster between people.

“Merlin has brought so much joy and fulfilment into my life,” Mina reflects. “It’s a beautiful, chaotic existence that I wouldn’t trade for anything.”

When asked if she ever feels overwhelmed by Merlin’s button-pressing, Mina is firm in her response. “That would be cruel. The buttons are his voice; they allow him to communicate with me fully. If we give animals the time and love they deserve, they will reciprocate tenfold.”

Why it Matters

Mina Alali’s story with Merlin is a testament to the extraordinary connections that can form between humans and animals. In a world often focused on the mundane, her narrative reminds us of the joy, chaos, and unconditional love that pets can bring into our lives. Merlin is not just a pig; he is a friend, a partner, and a symbol of the happiness that can emerge from embracing the unexpected. As we navigate our own lives, stories like this encourage us to cherish our unique relationships with animals, recognising the profound impact they can have on our personal journeys.
