In a stunning display of skill and speed, Luster, the highly regarded filly, clinched victory in the prestigious King’s Plate on Saturday, crossing the finish line with an impressive 7¼-length lead. The race, held at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, awarded a purse of $1 million, further solidifying Luster’s status as a formidable contender in Canadian horse racing. This triumph follows her recent success at the Woodbine Oaks, where she won by a remarkable 5½ lengths.
Velazquez’s Masterful Ride
Jockey John Velazquez, who is renowned for his record-breaking earnings in thoroughbred racing, guided Luster to her second King’s Plate victory. His first win in the event came in 2018 with the filly Wonder Gadot.
“I’ve been very lucky and very blessed with the fillies,” Velazquez remarked after the race. “Running against the colts and coming here to Canada and winning the Plate for a second time is truly special.”
Luster’s triumph at the King’s Plate marks a significant achievement for trainer Josie Carroll, who celebrated her fourth win in this illustrious race, her previous victories being in 2006 with Edenwold and 2011 with Inglorious. Carroll’s last Plate win was in 2020 with Mighty Heart, making this victory particularly sweet.
Race Recap: Luster’s Journey to Victory
The race day began with some unexpected challenges due to a labour dispute between Great Canadian Casino and locked-out security officers, resulting in delays at Woodbine. Nevertheless, Luster’s connections remained undeterred. Despite drawing the challenging No. 1 post position in the field of twelve, Velazquez expertly manoeuvred Luster out of early congestion.
Settling comfortably in fourth place behind contenders Fire and Wine, Very Special, and Magical Factor, Velazquez awaited the opportune moment to strike. As they approached the final turn, he moved Luster into second place. With a quarter-mile to go, she surged ahead, maintaining a commanding lead as she crossed the finish line in a time of 2:02.01, just shy of the track record set by last year’s champion filly, Moira.
“I didn’t want to be behind the horse that was on the lead, obviously,” Velazquez explained. “Once I put myself in a good position, she was perfect. Coming to the quarter-pole, I asked her to go, and she responded beautifully.”
The Road Ahead: Triple Crown Aspirations
With this latest victory, Luster has garnered significant attention as she sets her sights on the upcoming $500,000 Prince of Wales Stakes scheduled for September 7 at Fort Erie Race Track. The last horse to achieve the coveted Triple Crown in Canada was Wando in 2003, and Luster’s recent performances suggest she could be a serious contender.
Carroll, however, was cautious in discussing Luster’s future, preferring to savour the moment. “I think we’re just going to enjoy today,” she stated, emphasising the importance of celebrating their current success.
Luster has now earned five wins in six career starts, with her sole blemish being a third-place finish. The winner’s share of the King’s Plate purse has pushed her career earnings beyond $1.093 million, a testament to her exceptional talent and the hard work of her team.
