In a thrilling display of equine prowess, Luster clinched victory in the prestigious King’s Plate on Saturday at Woodbine Racetrack, showcasing her talent and solidifying her status as a leading contender in Canadian horse racing. The celebrated filly, ridden by veteran jockey John Velazquez, surged from a fourth-place position on the final turn to win decisively by 7 1/4 lengths, earning a prize of $1 million.

A Stellar Performance

Luster, the overwhelming 1-5 favourite, continued her impressive streak following a remarkable 5 1/2-length victory in the Woodbine Oaks on July 19. Velazquez, who has now secured his second King’s Plate title, previously won the race in 2018 aboard the filly Wonder Gadot. “I’ve been very lucky and very blessed with the fillies,” Velazquez expressed after the race. “Running against the colts and coming here to Canada and winning the (Plate) for a second time is an incredible feeling.”

Trainer Josie Carroll also celebrated a significant milestone, marking her fourth King’s Plate victory and her first since 2020. Carroll’s previous wins include Edenwold in 2006 and Inglorious in 2011. Among the 12-horse field, Military Time, piloted by Fraser Aebly, secured second place, followed by Fire and Wine with jockey Jalon Samuel.

The Race Breakdown

Despite drawing the challenging No. 1 post position earlier in the week, Luster’s connections remained optimistic. Velazquez expertly manoeuvred Luster out of potential trouble at the start, settling her into fourth place behind Fire and Wine, Very Special, and Magical Factor. As the race progressed, he moved Luster into second just before the critical turn for home.

With a quarter-mile remaining, Luster took command and extended her lead to two lengths, finishing the race in a time of 2:02.01, just shy of the track record set by Moira in 2022 at 2:01.48. “I didn’t want to be behind the horse that was on the lead, obviously,” Velazquez said. “Once I put myself in that position, I had a horse right on my outside, and I made sure I pushed him out. She was perfect sitting where I was.”

Carroll’s Confidence and Future Plans

Carroll, reflecting on the race, noted the anxiety that comes with every start but expressed confidence in Velazquez’s handling of Luster. “You watch Johnny take her through the trip. You could see he was confident at any point in the race, just waiting to find the right spot to move her,” she said. “That, in turn, gave me a lot of confidence just watching the way he was sitting on her.”

Part-owner Andrew Rosen revealed Carroll’s unwavering belief in Luster’s potential, recalling her bold prediction about winning the Plate. “Last year, Josie told me we were going to be standing here. I think she knew right from the get-go, and Josie’s done an amazing job with her,” he stated.

With this significant win, Luster is generating excitement for the upcoming $500,000 Prince of Wales Stakes scheduled for September 7 at Fort Erie Race Track. Should she triumph there, she would join the ranks of the last horse to achieve the Canadian Triple Crown, Wando, who accomplished the feat in 2003. While Carroll remained tight-lipped about future plans, it seems Luster’s next steps are sure to be closely watched.

Additional Highlights from the Day

The day was not solely about Luster; other notable performances included filly De la Renta, who, under Aebly’s guidance, won the $150,000 bet365 Soaring Free Stakes. The race concluded with a time of 1:17.19. In the $175,000 Grade 3 Bold Venture Stakes, Souped Up, a 10-1 pick ridden by Emma-Jayne Wilson, narrowly defeated Western Whirl in a thrilling finish.

Jockey Pietro Moran also made headlines, leading the 6-5 favourite Proctor Street to victory in the Grade 2 $200,000 Canadian Stakes. Velazquez was not to be outdone, guiding the 6-5 favourite Meloni to a decisive win in the $150,000 Catch a Glimpse Stakes for two-year-old fillies.

Why it Matters

Luster’s commanding victory in the King’s Plate is more than just a testament to her abilities; it signifies a revitalisation of interest in Canadian horse racing, particularly as she heads towards the Prince of Wales Stakes. A potential Triple Crown contender draws attention not only to the sport but also to the training excellence exemplified by Carroll and the strategic riding of Velazquez. As Luster’s journey unfolds, the spotlight will undoubtedly be on her and the implications her success may have for the future of racing in Canada.
