Designed by local artisan Katie Walgrave, this towering wooden figure, adorned in patriotic red, white, and blue, has swiftly transformed the town into a must-visit destination, coinciding with the celebrations of America’s 250th anniversary of independence.
A Unique Addition to Luverne
Erected just last month, the impressive nutcracker stands as one of the tallest of its kind globally, dwarfing the previous record holder—a 33-foot nutcracker located in Germany. Walgrave noted that the nutcracker was completed just in time for America 250, adding to the significance of its unveiling. “It ended up being kind of serendipitous that it was finished right before America 250,” she remarked. Visitors from diverse locations, including Denmark, China, and Wales, have already begun flocking to see the iconic figure.
The nutcracker, which sits on a concrete platform overlooking Interstate 90, is not just a whimsical attraction but a testament to the town’s rich history with nutcracker collectibles. It all began with Betty Mann, a local resident who amassed a remarkable collection of 2,500 nutcrackers. Her efforts to attract tourists to the Rock County History Center led to the formation of Just for Nuts, a nonprofit organisation dedicated to creating landmarks in Luverne. This initiative ultimately raised around $600,000 for the construction of the giant nutcracker.
Economic Boost for the Local Community

Walgrave emphasised that every dollar spent in the town, whether at gas stations, restaurants, or gift shops, is contributing to the local economy. “Any dollar amount that people are spending anywhere in Luverne…is already putting money back into our local economy,” she stated, highlighting the positive ripple effect of tourism.
As the nutcracker stands proudly, the community is now faced with the task of naming their new wooden sentinel. Those contributing $20 or more can submit name suggestions, and a dedicated committee will select the official title, set to be unveiled at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on July 18.

While some may argue that nutcrackers belong solely to the festive season, Walgrave insists that this giant wooden soldier will attract visitors year-round. “I would say that it’s not just Christmas season; people visit the nutcrackers down at the History Center year-round, also,” she affirmed, noting that the influx of tourists in the summer months has already increased significantly since the nutcracker’s installation.
