Victoria Police have initiated a substantial five-day search operation for Dezi Freeman, a fugitive wanted in connection with the tragic deaths of two police officers. This extensive effort comes nearly two months after previous searches yielded no results.

Renewed Efforts Following New Intelligence

The new search, which commenced on February 1, 2026, involves over 100 police personnel and volunteers, along with a police cadaver dog. The operation is concentrated around Mount Buffalo National Park, approximately 300 kilometres north of Melbourne, in an area previously searched in December. The latest initiative is driven by intelligence received regarding a gunshot heard shortly after the fatal incident at Freeman’s property in August.

Freeman has been at large since the fatal shooting of Senior Constables Neal Thompson and Vadim de Waart-Hottart while they were serving a warrant at his residence in Porepunkah. The incident occurred in late August, and despite an extensive manhunt that mobilised more than 400 officers immediately after the shooting, there has been no sign of the 56-year-old fugitive.

Search Operation Details and Challenges

The ongoing search is set to last five days and will cover challenging terrains, including thick bushland that has previously hindered search efforts. Police have conducted various firearms tests in the vicinity, which have contributed to this renewed operation.

Detective Inspector Adam Tilley, who is leading the taskforce dedicated to Freeman’s apprehension, emphasised the importance of the search, stating, “It remains our number one priority to locate Freeman. The extensive and systematic searches conducted over the past five months are testament to this.” He acknowledged three possibilities regarding Freeman’s status: he could be deceased, hiding with assistance, or surviving alone in the wilderness.

Community Safety and Vigilance

Authorities have urged local residents to stay vigilant and avoid approaching Freeman, who is considered armed and dangerous. In light of the situation, Victoria Police have offered an unprecedented reward of $1 million for information leading to Freeman’s capture, the largest such reward in the state’s history. This incentive aims to encourage the public to come forward with any relevant information that could assist in apprehending the fugitive.

The tragic recent history of this case adds urgency to the search, as both officers were killed under harrowing circumstances. Senior Constable Thompson was just days away from retirement, while Senior Constable de Waart-Hottart was on a temporary assignment in the area. Their loss has profoundly affected the community and the police force.

Why it Matters

The search for Dezi Freeman is not just a matter of law enforcement; it represents a community’s resilience in the face of tragedy. As police continue their efforts, the case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those in law enforcement and the impact of gun violence on society. With the promise of a substantial reward and the commitment of the Victoria Police, there remains hope that justice will prevail for the fallen officers and their families. The outcome of this search could also influence public trust in the police’s ability to ensure safety and uphold justice in the region.
