In a significant display of political clout, New York City’s Democratic socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani saw his endorsed candidates triumph in key congressional primaries, reshaping the landscape of the Democratic Party in the city. Mamdani’s Clean Sweep
On Tuesday evening, three candidates supported by Mayor Mamdani emerged victorious in their respective races, signalling a notable shift towards progressive ideals within the Democratic Party. Brad Lander, the former city comptroller and a prominent supporter of Mamdani, secured a decisive win against incumbent Congressman Dan Goldman in the NY-10 primary. Lander’s victory was celebrated at a watch party in Brooklyn, where he expressed his elation, stating, “What a glorious time to be a New Yorker.”
Meanwhile, another of Mamdani’s allies, Claire Valdez, a state lawmaker and former union organiser, defeated Antonio Reynoso, who had been positioned as the successor to retiring Representative Nydia Velázquez in the seventh district, which covers parts of Brooklyn and Queens. Perhaps the most significant upset came in the 13th congressional district, where public defence investigator Darializa Avila Chevalier stunned five-term incumbent Adriano Espaillat, who chairs the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.

In upstate New York, Anthony Constantino, endorsed by Trump, won the Republican primary for the 21st congressional district, a seat previously occupied by Trump ally Elise Stefanik.
