North Wales Police confirmed the vehicle, taken from Holyhead, Anglesey, was intercepted on Monday evening while travelling against traffic on the A55. The alarming manoeuvre prompted emergency responses, with the taxi narrowly avoiding collisions and damaging multiple parked cars before police deployed a spike strip to bring it to a halt. A cyclist was also injured during the chaos, sustaining non-life-threatening wounds.
The chilling footage, captured by Royal Air Force serviceman Martin Williams, reveals the taxi’s driver weaving dangerously through lanes before an officer directed traffic to the left. “I saw ahead of me there was a police car that was slowing all the traffic down and directing everyone into the left-hand lane before we came to a stop,” Williams recounted. “I then saw the officer in the car get out and put a stringer [spike strip] across the road. I thought the vehicle they were stopping was coming from behind me so I looked in the mirrors but then I suddenly saw the taxi coming toward me. It was coming quite quick, veered toward the police car and then slowed down before going over the stinger. It must have then gone about half a mile past me before it stopped and the police car in front of me followed it down the road.”
Charges Filed Against Darragh O’Grady
Darragh O’Grady, 31, of no fixed abode but from Ireland, now faces an array of serious offences related to the incident. He has been charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving, dangerous driving, aggravated taking of a vehicle, theft, and fraud by false representation. O’Grady was remanded in custody and is due to appear at Caernarfon Magistrates’ Court on Thursday. The charges carry significant penalties, including potential custodial sentences, as authorities stress the grave nature of his actions.
The timing of the incident has drawn stark comparisons to last week’s tragic A66 crash in Teesside, where seven people—including two police officers—lost their lives in a similar wrong-way collision.
