Marine Biologist Leads Ambitious Cleanup Initiative to Tackle Pollution in the St. Lawrence River

MONTREAL – In a bid to combat the persistent issue of pollution along the St. Lawrence River, marine biologist Lyne Morissette has embarked on an ambitious project aimed at collecting 1,000 tonnes of debris from the waterway’s shorelines. This initiative, dubbed Mission 1,000 tonnes, has evolved from a modest goal of removing 10 tonnes of waste eight years ago, reflecting a growing awareness of the environmental challenges facing this vital ecosystem.

A Journey of 2,000 Kilometres

Morissette, alongside a dedicated team of scientists, divers, and volunteers, is currently undertaking a 16-day expedition covering approximately 2,000 kilometres. Their route includes key areas such as Greater Montreal, Quebec City, Baie-Comeau, and the Innu community of Pessamit on the North Shore. This extensive shoreline cleanup effort aims not only to collect rubbish but also to foster a sense of community and shared responsibility for the environment.

“The more we collect, the more it highlights the problem, but it’s reassuring to know we’re removing it from nature,” Morissette shared in a recent interview as she prepared for a cleanup in Magog, located in the Eastern Townships.

Collecting Insights Alongside Trash

The items retrieved from the river reveal a concerning portrait of human impact on the environment. While volunteers consistently uncover common litter such as cigarette butts, plastic containers, and coffee cups, unexpected finds occasionally surface. Morissette recounted a previous cleanup where a starting gun, initially mistaken for a firearm, was discovered in the water.

“While it turned out to be harmless, it emphasises the importance of having protocols in place to manage these cleanups safely,” she noted. The expedition is not merely about trash collection; it involves documenting the waste to better understand its effects on local ecosystems.

Environmental Challenges and Community Engagement

Morissette, who serves as the scientific director of the expedition and is an associate professor at the Institut des sciences de la mer at the Université du Québec à Rimouski, acknowledges the harsh realities of pollution and climate change impacting Quebec. “We cannot ignore the challenges we face, including rising sea temperatures, biodiversity loss, and plastic waste,” she stated, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

Yet, amid these challenges, Morissette finds hope in the volunteers who dedicate their time to this cause. “Even small actions, like spending a few minutes picking up litter during a walk, contribute to a larger change. Every little effort counts,” she said, encouraging individuals to take action in their communities.

According to the Mission 1,000 tonnes website, the initiative has successfully gathered around 749 tonnes of waste to date, with Morissette estimating that the actual figure may be slightly higher. She emphasised that the organisation will persist beyond the 1,000-tonne milestone, though a name change is not anticipated, unlike the transition from the original 10-tonne target.

The cleanup project is co-organised by Stratégie Saint-Laurent, reflecting a collaborative approach to environmental stewardship. As the expedition nears its conclusion on August 21, Morissette remains optimistic about the impact of their efforts and the message of hope they aim to convey.
