A significant wildfire has prompted urgent evacuations in Suffolk, where homes and a caravan park have been cleared in response to a rapidly spreading blaze on Dunwich Heath. Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service has declared a major incident as firefighters work tirelessly to combat the flames, which have been exacerbated by challenging weather conditions.
Evacuations Underway
The fire, which ignited on the afternoon of Wednesday, 29 July, has led to the evacuation of multiple properties, including Coastguard Cottages, Mount Pleasant Farm, and Cliff House Holiday Park. An estimated 200 caravans were on standby for evacuation, though the exact number of individuals affected remains unclear.
Justin North, a holidaymaker at Dunwich Cliffs, described the frantic moments leading up to the evacuation. He recounted hearing urgent knocks at his door shortly after 11:30 PM, compelling him and his wife to leave immediately. The couple first detected smoke around 5:30 PM but initially dismissed it as a minor concern. However, the situation escalated quickly, leading to a harrowing drive through smoke-filled roads and a night spent in their car before they managed to reach the evacuation centre at Westleton Village Hall.
Firefighters Tackle the Blaze
At the height of the emergency, nearly 90 firefighters were deployed to fight the blaze, described as “large-scale and wind-driven.” The fire service has emphasised the need for caution, advising residents to keep windows and doors closed to minimise smoke inhalation. Fortunately, officials have indicated that there is currently no threat to the nearby Sizewell B nuclear power station, located over 10 miles away, although they continue to monitor the evolving situation closely.
Fire crews are utilising a range of resources, including off-road vehicles, drones, and quad bikes, to effectively manage the fire’s spread. The situation remains fluid, with updates being communicated to the public as they become available.
Environmental Concerns Heightened
The wildfire outbreak comes in the wake of an amber heat-health alert issued by the UK Health Security Agency, impacting the East Midlands, East of England, South East, and London. Additionally, the Environment Agency has declared drought conditions in the region, which are known to increase the risk of wildfires.
Much of the affected area is part of a nature reserve owned by the National Trust, which is actively supporting firefighting efforts. Both the National Trust Dunwich Heath and the nearby RSPB Minsmere nature reserve have been closed to the public, with authorities urging people to steer clear of Westleton Heath and surrounding areas.
Community Spirit Amidst Crisis
In the face of adversity, evacuees have displayed a remarkable sense of community. North noted a “blitz spirit” among those displaced, highlighting their relief at being safe despite the distressing circumstances. Approximately 48 individuals, including families with young children and pets, have found refuge in the Westleton Village Hall.
