The NHS is launching a nationwide, one‑off immunisation campaign this summer to offer the MenB vaccine to roughly one million teenagers and young adults, in response to a steady rise of invasive meningococcal disease cases across the country.
The Growing Threat of Meningitis B
Meningitis B, caused by the meningococcal group B bacterium, accounts for the majority of severe meningococcal infections in the United Kingdom. In the most recent reporting year, 378 individuals were recorded with invasive meningococcal disease, a figure that underscores the ongoing public health challenge.
The condition can develop swiftly, often within hours, and may progress to sepsis or neurological damage if not treated promptly.
Programme Details and Eligibility
The initiative will provide two free doses of the MenB vaccine to all Year 13 pupils and any young person under 25 who is beginning university or residential further education for the first time this autumn. The programme is scheduled to run throughout the summer months, aiming to reach the target population before the typical autumn surge in cases.

Supply constraints have limited the rollout, but health officials assure the public that the NHS has secured sufficient stock to meet the demand for this specific cohort.
Symptoms, Transmission and Prevention
Typical signs include a non‑fading rash, sudden high fever, severe headache, stiff neck, vomiting, joint and muscle aches, photophobia, cold extremities, seizures, confusion and extreme drowsiness. The bacteria are spread through respiratory secretions – coughs, sneezes, kissing, or the sharing of drinks, vapes and eating utensils – and can also be passed by close personal contact.
Early administration of antibiotics to close contacts, combined with vaccination, remains the most effective strategy for curbing transmission and preventing future infection.
Why Teenagers Have Been Overlooked
The MenB vaccine was introduced to the routine immunisation schedule for infants born on or after 1 July 2015, meaning that individuals who are now aged 11‑25 have never received it through the standard childhood programme. While babies are prioritised because they face the highest risk of severe disease, the current schedule leaves a gap for older adolescents who are nevertheless at increased exposure risk, particularly when living in shared accommodation such as university halls.
