Vancouver International Airport (YVR) anticipates a notable rise in arrivals, although it is unlikely to match the record-breaking numbers seen during high-profile events like Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in December 2024.
Anticipated Increase in Private Aircraft
Andy Margolis, Chief Operations Officer at YVR, has indicated that while the airport typically sees between 15 and 25 private planes each day, the upcoming tournament will bring more than just the usual traffic. However, Margolis believes the peak will not approach the astonishing 181 private jets that landed in a single day during Swift’s concert. “The World Cup spans several weeks, so I don’t expect the numbers around game days to come close to what we saw for Taylor Swift,” he noted, assuring that the airport is well-prepared for the expected increase.
Vancouver is set to host seven matches from June to July, drawing attention not just from international football fans but also from dignitaries and VIPs arriving in style. The logistics for private landings at YVR require prior booking and coordination with specialized companies that offer luxury amenities, including exclusive hangars and lounges for pilots.
Alternative Landing Options
For those flying into the region, Boundary Bay Airport in Delta, British Columbia, is preparing for a surge in private jet arrivals as well. Unlike YVR, Boundary Bay operates on a first-come, first-served basis, which may appeal to those looking for flexibility. Julia Rieberger, Administrative Manager for Alpha Aviation, has confirmed that they are making contingency plans to accommodate the expected demand, including additional parking for aircraft.
Rieberger mentioned, “We’ve received numerous inquiries from charter companies and private operators wanting to know about our pricing, fuel supply, customs clearance, and whether we can serve as a viable entry point into Vancouver.” However, she also cautioned that solid bookings are typically made closer to the actual travel dates, often within 24 to 48 hours of arrival.
Strategic Preparations by Air Traffic Authorities
Nav Canada, the body responsible for the country’s air traffic services, is also closely monitoring the upcoming summer demand profile, having planned for heightened activity well in advance. The organisation has a strong history of managing air traffic during major events, drawing on experience from past occasions such as the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and the G7 Summits.
A statement from Nav Canada highlighted their commitment: “Our preparations for this summer are informed by protocols and lessons learned from previous events, ensuring effective coordination with airlines, airport authorities, and neighbouring airports.”
Margolis confirmed that YVR’s team has been actively preparing for the FIFA World Cup since 2022, ensuring that all aspects of airport operations are streamlined for the influx of visitors.
Commercial Flight Capacity Remains Steady
For the many fans who will not be arriving in private jets, Margolis assured that the volume of commercial flights landing at YVR will remain unchanged, although the flights are expected to be at full capacity. The airport typically accommodates around 80,000 passengers daily during the summer months. With forecasts predicting a 5 to 10 per cent increase in passenger numbers during the tournament, Margolis emphasised that the overall system can manage this uptick without significant strain.
“While the number of flights will not change, we anticipate that the passengers on those flights will primarily be travelling for FIFA-related events,” he explained.
