This decision follows an outbreak that has seen approximately 12,485 cases of cyclosporiasis reported since June, making Michigan the epicentre of a significant public health crisis.

In Michigan alone, there have been 279 reported hospitalisations, with a total of 517 across the nation. Symptoms, which can manifest up to two weeks after exposure, include explosive diarrhoea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps, making hydration and nutrient intake critical during illness.
