Wildfires are raging across northern Minnesota, prompting Governor Tim Walz to deploy the National Guard to assist in firefighting efforts. With conditions worsened by dry weather and strong winds, state officials are racing against time to safeguard communities and manage the rapidly expanding blazes.
Emergency Declaration and National Guard Support
In response to the escalating wildfire threat, Governor Walz issued an executive order on Saturday, declaring a peacetime emergency. This move allows for the mobilisation of additional resources to combat the unpredictable and fast-moving fires that have put numerous communities at risk.
“These wildfires are a significant threat to the safety of our residents,” Walz stated. “This declaration enables us to mobilise critical resources necessary to protect lives, facilitate evacuations, and support recovery efforts. I extend my gratitude to all first responders, including our National Guard members, who are tirelessly working to keep Minnesotans safe.”
The National Guard’s involvement will include providing personnel, equipment, and logistical support to bolster firefighting operations across the region.
Current Fire Situation
Two major wildfires are currently causing widespread concern. The Stewart Trail fire, situated near Two Harbors, has expanded to approximately 355 acres (145 hectares), while the Flanders fire in Crow Wing County has reached an alarming size of around 1,200 acres. As of Sunday afternoon, the Minnesota Incident Command System (MNICS) reported that containment efforts on the Stewart Trail fire have reached 30%.
Due to the severity of these blazes, mandatory evacuation orders have been issued for residents and businesses in areas northeast of Two Harbors. State Highway 61 has also been closed between Two Harbors and Silver Bay, further complicating access for emergency services.
Damage Assessment and Community Impact
Preliminary assessments conducted by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office indicate that the fires have resulted in the destruction of 34 structures, including eight primary residences and 26 secondary buildings. Sheriff Nathan Stadler acknowledged the distressing situation for affected residents and highlighted the ongoing efforts of emergency crews.
“We understand the stress this situation is causing for everyone involved,” Stadler said during a press conference. “Our teams are working non-stop to bring these fires under control and ensure the safety of the area so that residents can return home.”
State officials have cautioned that unpredictable wind patterns and stronger gusts could hinder containment efforts in the coming days. Additionally, a temporary flight restriction is in place, with authorities urging the public to refrain from operating drones near the fire zones.
