In a controversial move, the Minnesota Republican Party has come under fire for observing a moment of silence for Derek Chauvin, the former police officer serving a lengthy prison sentence for the murder of George Floyd. Attorney General Keith Ellison, who prosecuted Chauvin, condemned the gesture as “an act of profound cruelty” directed at Floyd’s family, igniting further debate over the implications of such a tribute.

During their annual convention in Duluth, the Minnesota Republicans honoured Chauvin at the behest of a delegate. Attendees reportedly stood in silence for approximately ten seconds, a decision that has since drawn criticism from various quarters, including Ellison, who described the act as disrespectful to both Floyd’s family and the law enforcement community in Minnesota.
