In a remarkable turn of events following the devastating twin earthquakes in Venezuela, a man named Hernán Gil has been rescued alive after being trapped beneath the debris for eight harrowing days. Emergency responders successfully extricated him from the wreckage of a building that collapsed on 24 June, leading to a tragic death toll of nearly 2,300, with countless others still unaccounted for.
A Gruelling Rescue Operation
Emergency teams worked tirelessly for over 100 hours to reach Gil, who was discovered under a staggering 140 tonnes of rubble. The rescue operation was characterised by its complexity, according to a Chilean firefighter who described it as “without doubt the most complex and technically difficult” challenge he had ever encountered.
Paramedic Allan Madrigal from the Costa Rican Red Cross played a pivotal role in the operation, recalling the emotional moment he first heard Gil’s faint cries for help. “I had to ask a colleague to confirm that I wasn’t just imagining it,” Madrigal stated, highlighting the tension and urgency that enveloped the scene.
