Experts are sounding the alarm, debunking these claims and urging the public to prioritise sun safety during this critical time.

In recent weeks, a flurry of misleading rhetoric has circulated online, with influencers and podcasters advising followers to abandon sunscreen. One viral claim suggests that while sunlight boosts Vitamin D production—which has cancer-fighting properties—sunscreen’s “toxic” chemicals somehow increase cancer risks. This message has gained traction, particularly as temperatures soar across the continent.

“Even if you wash your face, sunscreen stays on your skin and increases your chances of getting cancer,” one social media user asserted. However, dermatological experts refute these statements, affirming there is no scientific basis for such alarming assertions.

The Science Behind Sun Protection

The spread of these claims aligns with a long-standing conspiracy theory that posits a correlation between increased skin cancer rates and the widespread use of sunscreen since the 1940s. Critics of this theory, including John Dombrowski, a cosmetic chemist based in the United States, highlight the fallacy of correlation equating to causation.

Statistics from Cancer Research UK reveal a startling 164 per cent increase in melanoma skin cancer cases since the early 1990s, with a 26 per cent rise over the past decade. Despite TikTok’s community guidelines prohibiting misleading content, claims about sunscreen continue to proliferate. The platform has made moves to mitigate this by launching a clinician-creator network in the UK, comprising 19 NHS-qualified professionals with a combined following of over 2.2 million. However, the spread of misinformation remains a significant challenge.
