A public memorial held at Montreal’s Bell Centre has turned into a poignant tribute for fallen police officer Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty last month. Family, friends, and thousands of officers gathered to commemorate the 34-year-old’s bravery, as Police Chief Fady Dagher spoke movingly about the impact of Benredouane’s actions during his final moments.
A Life Cut Short
Benredouane, who had only been with the Montreal police force since 2021, responded to a distressing 911 call on June 22 regarding gunfire at a hotel in Côte-des-Neiges. Despite being unwell from a prior injury, he and his partner were the first on the scene. Tragically, the incident resulted in the deaths of two others: civilian Michel Mizrahi, aged 68, and the suspected gunman, Seth Scott Hatfield, 25, from Lethbridge, Alberta. Furthermore, a female officer sustained critical injuries during the chaotic exchange.
Chief Dagher reflected on Benredouane’s heroism, stating, “You cut short his murderous rampage. How many people did you save?” His words resonated deeply with the audience, painting a picture of a dedicated officer who put the safety of others before his own well-being.

His family and friends expressed their gratitude for the support shown during this difficult time, with Samir Benserradj, a family member, stating that the large turnout provided solace amid their grief. “We always think this happens to someone else,” he said. “Then a few hours later, my cousin wrote and said the brother of his wife was killed. It was shocking, it was devastating.”

Members of the public were invited to join the procession and pay their respects, with many bringing flowers to honour Benredouane’s memory. Nour Gharib, a young woman who attended the memorial, expressed her condolences, saying, “I am sending all my thoughts and prayers to his family, may he rest in peace, and I thank all police officers, firefighters, and nurses, who are there for us every day.”
A private ceremony was held for close family members at the Islamic Centre of Quebec shortly after Benredouane’s passing, further underscoring the deep connections he maintained within the community.
