Quebec provincial police have dismantled a sophisticated operation in Montreal that produced counterfeit passports, birth certificates, driver’s licences, and a variety of other essential documents. This significant crackdown took place on July 8, with the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) collaborating with law enforcement from Montreal and Gatineau, as well as experts from Quebec’s Forensic Science and Legal Medicine Laboratory, according to an official statement released by the police.
Operation Details
The police operation resulted in the seizure of over 250 items critical to the production of fake documents. Among the items confiscated were passport covers, bank card templates, laminators, and printers, which were integral to the operation. Additionally, three vehicles were seized during the raid, further indicating the scale of the operation.
Captain Marie-Hélène Poulin, who leads the SQ’s Economic Crimes and Cybercrime Investigation unit, confirmed that the lab had the capability to produce a wide range of counterfeit documents. These included complete passports for several countries such as Canada, France, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and Italy. Furthermore, the laboratory could replicate driver’s licences for various Canadian provinces, including Quebec, Ontario, British Columbia, New Brunswick, Alberta, Saskatchewan, as well as for the state of Florida. Other counterfeit items included firearms acquisition permits and Quebec health insurance cards.
Arrest and Charges
One individual was arrested during the operation and has since been released on bail. They face multiple charges, including forgery, possession or trafficking of counterfeit documents, and laundering of proceeds derived from criminal activities. The police are also in the process of recovering substantial sums of money linked to a bank account associated with the operation.
